1902 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1902 municipal election was held December 8, 1902 for the purpose of electing a mayor and three aldermen to sit on the Edmonton Town Council, as well as five public school trustees and five separate school trustees. There were six aldermanic positions on the council at the time, but three of them were already filled: Cornelius Gallagher, Edmund Grierson, and Phillip Heiminck had been elected for two-year terms in 1901, and were still in office. Edmonton Town Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. Joseph Henri Picard
Joseph Henri Picard (February 18, 1857 – May 23, 1934) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Picard was born in Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec on February 18, 1857. He apprenticed as a carpenter before coming west in 1884 to Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, Fort Qu'Appelle and then Regina, Saskatchewan, Regina. In Calgary, he met Father Albert Lacombe, who suggested to him that he move to Edmonton, which he did in 1887. Once in Edmonton, he opened a general store, Larue & Picard; it was sold in 1907 when both he and his partner retired. In 1903, he married Martine Voyer. The couple had two sons. Nicholas Dubois Dominic Beck (May 4, 1857 – May 15, 1928) was a lawyer and jurist in Alberta, Canada. Early life Beck was born in Cobourg, Ontario on May 4, 1857, to Reverend J.W.R. and Georgina (Boulton) Beck. He attended private schools and the Collegiate Institute of Peterboro. He graduated from the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School with a Bachelor of Laws in 1881, having been practicing in Peterborough, Ontario since 1879. Career Lawyer He was called to the Ontario bar in 1882, moving his practice to Winnipeg, Manitoba the year after, then made his way further west, to Calgary in 1889 practicing at the firm of Lougheed, McCarthy & Beck, and settling in Edmonton in 1891 to form the firm of Beck, Emery, Newell and Boulton. Alex Taylor (businessman)
Alexander Taylor (May 17, 1853 – February 12, 1916) was a Canadian entrepreneur, inventor and politician. He is credited as being one of the founders of the city of Edmonton. Taylor was born in on May 17, 1853, in Ottawa, Ontario, and came to Edmonton in 1877. Shortly after his arrival in Edmonton, Taylor established the first telegraph, telephone, and electricity systems. Taylor asked the Bell Telephone Company to provide services in 1883. Alex Taylor, Dominion Telegraph Agent, brought the first two telephones made of Spanish mahogany, and asked store owner Henry William McKenney of St. Albert to keep the device in St. Albert. Taylor, who, at the time was working for the Dominion Telegraph and Signal Service proposed running a telephone line from his office to St. Albert, Alberta. Kenneth McLeod
Kenneth Archibald McLeod (September 7, 1858 – July 27, 1940), was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. He was also the builder of the McLeod Building, the Edmonton's first skyscraper. Early life and career McLeod was born September 7, 1858 in Port Elgin, Ontario. His family moved to Kansas in 1870 and homesteaded near Solomon three years before moving to Lynchburg, Virginia. McLeod worked with his father in the lumber and construction businesses. In 1879, he moved to Winnipeg, where he stayed for two years before setting out for Edmonton August 5, 1881. His journey was on foot, in the company of two other men with three oxen, three Red River carts, a buckboard, and a pony. After ninety-one days of travel, he arrived in Edmonton November 3. Robert Lee (Canadian Politician)
Robert Lee (March 10, 1862 – August 5, 1925) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a mayor of Edmonton. Biography Lee was born in Lanark County, Ontario on March 10, 1862 and graduated from the Dominion Business College in Kingston. He married Annette Wilson, with whom he had a daughter and two sons, in 1897. He served as a member of the Lanark City Council from 1892 until 1898, after which he moved to Edmonton. He was in partnership with John Ross in grain trading, insurance, and loans under the name Ross & Lee until 1902, after which he partnered with W I Crafts in real estate, timber, and coal mining under the name Crafts & Lee (another partner was admitted in 1905 as they became Crafts, Lee & Gallinger). Arthur Cushing
Arthur Thompson Cushing (February 10, 1869 – March 26, 1944) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. His brother, William Henry Cushing, was a mayor of Calgary, while another brother, Alfred Cushing, served as alderman in that city. Biography Cushing was born in Kenilworth, Ontario February 10, 1869. He was educated at Essec High School, and earned a B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1898. He moved to Edmonton in 1900 to manage his brother's lumber business. In 1902 he became manager of the Edmonton branch of Cushing Bros. Ltd., which he would manage until retiring in 1927. Cornelius Gallagher (Canadian Politician)
Cornelius Gallagher (December 31, 1854 – October 27, 1932) was a meat merchant and politician in Alberta, Canada. He served as a municipal councillor and briefly as the third mayor of Edmonton. Gallagher was born in New Brunswick in 1854, the son of an Irish immigrant father. After attending the schools of his birthplace, he moved west to Winnipeg with his family, and became involved in the family meat packing business, established by his father. He would soon move west again to what would later become the province of Saskatchewan, where he would continue his business, providing his product to the local police establishments and soldiers during the North-West Rebellion. After his contracts expired there, Gallagher would move again further west, to Edmonton, where he would permanently settle. James Ross (Alberta Politician)
James Ross (August 14, 1851 – June 21, 1936) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Ross was born August 14, 1851, in Toronto. He received his apprenticeship in tinsmithing and worked as a journeyman. He moved to Edmonton in 1878 and established a tinshop in 1882. In 1883, he created the Ross Brothers general hardware store with his brother, Frederick. They sold the business in 1912. He was director of the Western Canadian Vinegar Company and Vice President of the Alberta Milling Company. James Ross married Ellen McBeath of Edmonton; the pair had seven children.
