1902 Arizona Football Team
The 1902 Arizona football team was an American football team that represented the University of Arizona as an independent during the 1902 college football season. In its first and only season under head coach Leslie Gillett, the team compiled a 5–0 record, did not allow a point to be scored against it, and outscored opponents by a total of 134 to 0. In the second meeting in the Arizona–Arizona State football rivalry, Arizona defeated the Tempe Normal School, 12 to 0. The team captain was Bard L. Cosgrove. Leslie Gillett
Leslie Alexander Gillett (February 15, 1881 – February 20, 1969) was an American football coach. He served as the third head football coach at the University of Arizona, coaching for one season in 1902 and compiling a record of 5–0. American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. Arizona–Arizona State Football Rivalry
The Arizona–Arizona State football rivalry (also known as the Duel in the Desert) is a college football rivalry between the University of Arizona Wildcats (UA) and the Arizona State University Sun Devils (ASU). One of the longest football rivalries, the winner receives the Territorial Cup, created for the 1899 champion between schools in Arizona and which the NCAA has certified as the oldest rivalry trophy in college football. Although the Territorial Cup did not change hands as a regular part of the competition until 2001, the rivalry between the two schools continued after 1899, a semi-regular event until becoming an annual event, uninterrupted, from 1946 onwards. Fort Grant is a state prison and a former United States Army fortification in the U.S. state of Arizona. Fort Grant is located on the southwestern slope of Mount Graham in what is now Graham County. The post is named for Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. Naco, a Census-Designated Place (CDP) located in Cochise County, Arizona, United States had a recorded population of 1,046 during the 2010 census. It is located directly across the United States–Mexico border from its sister city Naco, Sonora. Naco is best known for an accidental 1929 air raid and is the first and only municipality in the Continental United States to have been aerially bombed by foreigners. The present-day unincorporated town of Naco, Arizona, was established in the early 20th century. The area was originally settled by the Nahua and Opata Indians.
