1901 U.S. National Championships (tennis)
List of champions of the 1901 U.S. National Championships tennis tournament (now known as the US Open (tennis), US Open). The men's tournament was held from August 19 to August 27 on the outdoor grass courts at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. The women's tournament was held from June 25 to June 29 on the outdoor grass courts at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the 21st U.S. National Championships and the second Grand Slam (tennis), Grand Slam tournament of the year. Grand Slam (tennis)
The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". The Grand Slam tournaments, also referred to as majors, are the world's four most important annual professional tennis tournaments. Grass Court
A grass court is one of the four different types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Grass courts are made of grasses in different compositions depending on the tournament. Although grass courts are more traditional than other types of tennis courts, maintenance costs of grass courts are higher than those of hard courts and clay courts. Grass courts (in the absence of suitable covers) must be left for the day if rain appears, as the grass becomes very slippery when wet and will not dry for many hours. This is a disadvantage on outdoor courts compared to using hard and clay surfaces, where play can resume in 30 to 120 minutes after the end of rain. The 1902 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. Leo Ware
Leonard Everett Ware (September 27, 1876 – December 28, 1914) was an American male tennis player of Canadian origin. He won two titles in the men's doubles competition at the U.S. National Championships played at the Newport Casino, and reached the semifinals of the singles four times. Ware won the interscholastic championship held in Newport, representing Roxbury Latin School. He graduated from Harvard University in 1899 and represented Harvard in the intercollegiate tennis tournament, winning in the men's doubles in 1896, 1897 and 1898 and in the singles in 1898. He won the Canadian Championships in 1897, beating Edwin P. Fischer in the final, and again in 1898, defeating Malcolm Whitman in the final. In March 1898 he won the inaugural edition of the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships, held in Newton Centre, after defeating Holcombe Ward in the final in three straight sets. Beals Wright
Beals Coleman Wright (December 19, 1879 – August 23, 1961) was an American tennis player who was active at the end of the 1890s and early 1900s. He won the singles title at the 1905 U.S. National Championships. Wright was a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and the older brother of American tennis player Irving Wright. Biography Beals was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 19, 1879 to George Wright, the shortstop for the Cincinnati Red Stockings and founder of the sporting goods store Wright & Ditson. Beals was the brother of Irving Wright, the 1917 and 1918 U.S. Championship men's doubles champion. Together they won the men's doubles title at the Canadian Tennis Championship four times (1902, 1903, 1904, 1905). Beals was the nephew of baseball pioneer Harry Wright.
