1900 United States Presidential Election In Missouri
The 1900 United States presidential election in Missouri took place on November 6, 1900. Voters chose 17 electors to represent them in the Electoral College via a popular vote, pitting incumbent Republican President William McKinley and his running mate Theodore Roosevelt against the Democratic ticket of challenger William Jennings Bryan and Adlai Stevenson. Missouri gave Bryan a 51.48 percent of the vote versus McKinley's 45.94 percent, a margin of 5.53%. While losing Missouri, McKinley nevertheless won the national election by a 6.13 point margin. Notably, this was one of only two occasions in the 20th century that Missouri voted for a losing presidential candidate, as the state was often considered a political bellwether in that period. William Jennings Bryan
William Jennings Bryan (March 19, 1860 – July 26, 1925) was an American lawyer, orator and politician. The 2008 United States presidential election in Missouri was held on November 4, 2008, and was part of the 2008 United States presidential election, which took place throughout all 50 states and D.C. Voters chose 11 representatives, or electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Wharton Barker (May 1, 1846 – April 9, 1921) was an American financier and publicist who held influence in the Republican presidential selection during the 1880s and was a rival Populist presidential candidate in 1900. Life Wharton Barker was born on May 1, 1846, to Abraham Barker and Sarah Wharton in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1867 he married Margaret Corlies and later had three children with her. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1866, but prior to this time had organized and commanded a company in the Civil War. As a member of the banking firm of Barker Bros. & Co., he was appointed in 1878 as special financial agent of the Russian government. Job Harriman (January 15, 1861 – October 26, 1925) was an ordained minister who later became an agnostic and a socialist. In 1900, he ran for vice president of the United States along with Eugene Debs on the ticket of the Socialist Party of America. He later twice ran for mayor of Los Angeles, drawing considerable attention and support. He also founded a socialist utopian community called Llano del Rio in California, later relocated to Louisiana. Voters chose 18 representatives, or electors, to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Missouri was very narrowly won by Secretary of War William Howard Taft ( R–Ohio), running with James S. Sherman, with 48.50% of the popular vote, against former U.S. Representative William Jennings Bryan ( D–Nebraska), running with John W. Kern, with 48.41% of the popular vote.
