1899–1900 Aston Villa F.C. Season
The 1899–1900 English football season was Aston Villa's 12th season in the Football League First Division, the top flight of English football at the time. Villa finished the season as Champions for the fifth time extending their record as the most successful League team. Sheffield United set the pace this season and built up a six-point lead by the end of December. Villa grew stronger towards the end of the season, losing just one game in their last 13, to leave United in second place by two points. Villa finished their programme first, leaving a mathematical chance for the Blades if they scored plenty of goals in the last two games. Their last game at Burnley was lost, leaving Villa champions by two points. Billy Garraty, great-great grandfather of footballer Jack Grealish, was League top scorer this season. Billy George (footballer, Born 1874)
William George (29 June 1874 – 4 December 1933) was a footballer who played for Aston Villa from October 1897 to July 1911. His previous clubs were the now defunct Woolwich Ramblers, Army football for the Royal Artillery and Trowbridge Town when he was on leave. He was signed by Aston Villa from the Army for £50 in 1897. He played in 356 league matches and 40 cup matches. While at Villa Park, George kept goal in three Villa title winning sides in 1899, 1900 and 1910 as well as their 1905 cup winning side. His international career was limited and he had 3 caps with the England team in 1902. He was sold to Birmingham City as a player/trainer in 1911. He is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers to have played for Aston Villa in its history. George also played 13 first-class cricket matches as a batsman with Warwickshire. Billy Garraty
William Garraty (6 October 1878 – 6 May 1931) was a footballer in the early years of professional football in England, who played for Aston Villa from August 1897 to September 1908. Before playing for Villa he played for Aston Shakespeare. Garraty was capped once by England appearing in a game against Wales in 1903. Career Billy Garraty made his league debut for Aston Villa during the 1897–98 season but made just one other appearance that year and remained a bit part player as Aston Villa won the title the following year. George Burrell Ramsay (4 March 1855 – 7 October 1935) was a Scottish footballer and manager. Ramsay was the secretary and manager of Aston Villa Football Club during the club's 'Golden Age'.
