The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) was one of the first collegiate athletic conferences in the United States. The 1899 Vanderbilt Commodores football team represented Vanderbilt University during the 1899 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season. The Commodores were coached by James L. Crane, in his first year as head coach. Quarterback Frank Godchaux Sr., the father of Frank Godchaux, from Abbeville, Louisiana, who transferred from LSU to Vanderbilt in 1897, lettered this year in football. The 1899 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season was the college football games played by the member schools of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association as part of the 1899 college football season. The season began on October 6, 1899 with Vanderbilt visiting Cumberland. Sewanee won the conference with 11 conference victories. With just 13 players, the team known as the "Iron Men" had a six-day road trip with five shutout wins over Texas A&M; Texas; Tulane; LSU; and Ole Miss. The 1899 LSU Tigers football team represented the LSU Tigers of Louisiana State University during the 1899 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season. New coach John P. Gregg led the Tigers to a 1–4 season. The only wins were in an exhibition game against a high school team (which LSU does not officially record as a win) and against rival, Tulane. The 1899 Sewanee Tigers football team represented Sewanee: The University of the South in the 1899 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season. Sewanee was one of the first college football powers of the South and the 1899 team was one of its best. The 1899 Tigers won 12 games and lost none, outscored opponents 322–10, and won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) title. The team of 21 players was led by head coach Herman "Billy" Suter and future College Football Hall of Famer and captain Henry "Ditty" Seibels. Maurice Gordon Clarke (May 2, 1877 – June 5, 1944) was an American football and baseball player and coach. The Omaha, Nebraska native served as head football coach at the University of Texas at Austin in 1899, at Western Reserve University—now a part of Case Western Reserve University—in 1900, and at Washington University in St. Louis, compiling a career college football record of 15–8–3. He was also the head baseball coach at Texas in the spring of 1900, tallying a mark of 14–2–1. Clarke was a graduate of the University of Chicago and played quarterback for the Chicago Maroons from 1896 to 1898 teams under Amos Alonzo Stagg. He also lettered in baseball at Chicago.
