Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as "the race that stops the nation". The Melbourne Cup has a long tradition, with the first race held in 1861. It was originally run over but was shortened to in 1972 when Australia adopted the metric system. Flemington Racecourse
Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is the world's richest handicap and the world's richest 3200-metre horse race. The racecourse is situated on low alluvial flats, next to the Maribyrnong River. The area was first used for horse racing in March 1840. James Wilson (Australian Rules Footballer)
James Wilson (1856 – 16 November 1935) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), captaining the side for a few seasons during the 1870s and 1880s. This was an era when the club won a number of premierships prior to the inception of the Victorian Football League (VFL). Before taking up football, "Young Jim Wilson" was a jockey who rode in the Melbourne Cup, and later a successful trainer, most notably of the 1899 Melbourne Cup winner Merriwee. 1900 Melbourne Cup
The 1900 Melbourne Cup was a two-mile handicap horse race which took place on Tuesday, 6 November 1900. This race saw a 28-horse field compete. James Scobie a former Steeplechase jockey turned trainer had the first two placegetters after Clean Sweep beat Maltster by one and a half lengths; 25-1 shot Alix was third. Clean Sweep had won the Coongy Handicap at Caulfield before winning the Moonee Valley Cup at Moonee Valley. Jockey Andrew 'Dingo' Richardson only got the ride on Clean Sweep after Bobby Lewis who had his choice of all four of Scobie's runner choose Maltster who had won both the Australian Derby and Victoria Derby. A handicap race in horse racing is a race in which horses carry different weights, allocated by the handicapper. A better horse will carry a heavier weight, to give it a disadvantage when racing against slower horses. Victoria Racing Club
The Victoria Racing Club was founded in 1864. It was formed following the disbanding of the Victoria Turf Club and the Victoria Jockey Club. A legacy passed from the Victoria Turf Club was the annual "race that stops a nation", the Melbourne Cup, which was first contested in 1861. From its foundation in 1864 until 2001, the Victoria Racing Club was the responsible authority for the conduct of thoroughbred racing in the State of Victoria, Australia. Since 2001, this role has been managed by Racing Victoria Limited. The VRC is managed by an unpaid committee, elected by club members. In 1871, the Victorian Government appointed the VRC as trustees of a site of 352 acres (1.4 km2) of Crown Land, next to the Maribyrnong River, which became known as Flemington Racecourse.
