1899 Delaware Football Team
The 1899 Delaware football team represented Delaware College—now known as the University of Delaware—as an independent during the 1899 college football season. The team posted a 6–2 record. Herbert Rice began his third season as the team's head coach but resigned after the first game to play football for the Duquesne Country and Athletic Club of Pittsburgh. By late October, Delaware was being led by a coach Wentz from Princeton. Rice returned from Pittsburgh after Delaware had finished its season. Rice", ''Chester Times'', December 31, 1932, Chester, Pennsylvania was an American college football head coach who was Delaware football program's second head coach. He compiled a 11–18–4 record from 1897 through 1901. During the 1899 season, he played quarterback and halfback for the professional Duquesne Country and Athletic Club of Pittsburgh. The 1899 college football season had no clear-cut champion, with the ''Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book'' listing Harvard and Princeton as having been selected national champions. Chicago, Kansas, and Sewanee went undefeated. With just 13 players, the Sewanee team, known as the "Iron Men", had a six-day road trip with five shutout wins over Texas A&M; Texas; Tulane; LSU; and Ole Miss. The Duquesne Country and Athletic Club was a professional American football, football team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1895 until 1900. The team was considered one of the best, if not the best, professional football teams in the country from 1898 until 1900. However, the team is most famous for being the first football franchise to be owned by an individual, William Chase Temple. Origin The Duquesne Country and Athletic Club, started playing in 1895 and at first intended to use only amateur players. However, after four games, before playing the Pittsburgh Athletic Club (football), Pittsburgh Athletic Club, they began hiring stars and soon became the most professional team in the city. 1898 Duquesne fielded the best team in Pittsburgh since 1895. Wilmington High School was a public high school in Wilmington, Delaware. Its mascot was the red devils. It was the last traditional public high school in the Wilmington city limits. History It was established in 1872. Initially black children were not permitted to enroll at Wilmington High, and they were only allowed to go to Howard High School. In the middle of the 20th century the school racially integrated. Initially there were conflicts. In 1960 it moved into its final building. Swarthmore ( , ) is a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Swarthmore was originally named "Westdale" in honor of noted painter Benjamin West, who was one of the early residents of the town.
