1898 Sheriff Of London Charity Shield
The 1898 Sheriff of London Charity Shield was the first edition of the Sheriff of London Charity Shield. The match and subsequent replay were both drawn and hence the honour was shared between Corinthian and Sheffield United. Match Background The contest was proposed by Sir Thomas Dewar who was a Sheriff of London in 1897 and part of the organising committee. Sheffield United F.C. were league champions for the first time in their history in the 1897–98 Football League and Corinthian were the premier amateur side of the time providing many of the England national football team players. First-half The first half was a very defensive encounter, partly due to the wet pitch. The referee Mr E.E. Stuart pulled up players from both sides for a large number of fouls. Sheriff Of London Charity Shield
The Sheriff of London Charity Shield, also known as the Dewar Shield, was a football competition played annually between the best amateur and best professional club in England, though Scottish amateur side Queens Park also took part in 1899. The professional side was either the Football League champion or FA Cup winner from the previous season while the amateurs were usually represented by Corinthians, a renowned amateur side of the time. The first game was played on 19 March 1898, after being devised by Sir Thomas Dewar and ratified by the Football Association, whose president Lord Kinnaird and former president Sir Francis Marindin sat on the Shield's committee. Proceeds from the annual game were distributed to hospitals and charities. William Foulke (footballer)
William Henry "Fatty" Foulke (12 April 1874 – 1 May 1916; sometimes spelled ''Foulk'', ''Foulkes'') was an English professional cricketer and football player. Foulke was renowned for his great size ( by some estimates) and weight, reaching perhaps 24 stone (152 kg; 336 lb) at the end of his career, although reports on his weight vary. Playing career He played four first-class matches for Derbyshire County Cricket Club in the 1900 season, but is remembered primarily as a goalkeeper for Sheffield United although he later played for Chelsea and Bradford City. After being discovered playing for village side Blackwell in a Derbyshire Cup tie at Ilkeston Town, Foulke made his debut for Sheffield United against West Bromwich Albion on 1 September 1894 and led the team to three FA Cup finals (winning two) and a League Championship. Jack Almond
John Almond (born 6 November 1876) was an English footballer who played as a forward. Born in Darlington, County Durham, he spent the majority of his career in and around the Yorkshire area with spells at Leeds City, Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers and Sheffield United where he played over 100 games, winning the First Division championship in 1898 and gaining an FA Cup winners medal having scored in the 1899 final. Playing career Almond started his career playing in his local area and soon came to prominence whilst at Darlington, leading him to be signed by Sheffield United. Whilst in Yorkshire Almond was initially a regular in the side, with his goals helping The Blades to be crowned English champions in 1898 and win the FA Cup in 1899, having scored United's third goal in the final. Wilfrid Foster
Major Wilfrid Lionel Foster (2 December 1874 – 22 March 1958) was an English Army officer and a first-class cricketer: a right-handed batsman who played for Worcestershire County Cricket Club in their early years as a first-class team. He was one of the seven Foster brothers, all of whom played first-class cricket for the county. Foster also appeared for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and the Gentlemen. He was also an amateur footballer, turning out for Corinthian. Robert Topham (3 November 1867 – 31 August 1931) was an English international footballer, who played as an outside right. Career Born in Ellesmere, Topham played for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Corinthian and Casuals, and earned two caps for England between 1893 and 1894. Alfred Ernest Priest (24 July 1875 – 5 May 1922) was a professional footballer from the North East of England who won the 1899 and 1902 FA Cup finals with Sheffield United. Playing career Priest was born in Guisborough and played for Darlington and South Bank before joining Sheffield United in 1896. Ralph Gaudie
Ralph Gaudie (1876 – 1951) was an English footballer who played as a centre forward. His playing career with Aston Villa has in some sources been wrongly attributed to a brother, Richard Gaudie, who has subsequently been shown not to have existed. Gaudie was born in Guisborough, Yorkshire and first signed for his local club South Bank, before making the step up to professionalism with Sheffield United. He played six times and scored twice in the 1897–98 season as United won the First Division title, but did not pick up a winners' medal. In August 1898 he joined Aston Villa and played five times for them scoring one goal in the 1898-99 season as Villa too won the First Division title. Kenneth McKay (''circa'' 1876 – unknown) was a Scottish association footballer who played as a forward. Born in Wishaw, McKay started his footballing career with Hamilton Academical before moving south to play for Sheffield United. Ernest Needham
Ernest Needham (21 January 1873 – 8 March 1936) was an English footballer and cricketer. He played in sixteen international football matches for England and captained the side in 1901. He was an outstanding left half who played for Sheffield United from 1891 until 1910. He was instrumental in their promotion campaign of 1892–93 and then captained their team from 1895 to 1905. Thomas Morren (27 March 1871 – 29 January 1929) was an English international footballer, who played as a centre half. Early life Morren was born in Sunderland, the second of fifth children. His father was Irish. Like his father he worked as an ironfounder.
