In their second season under head coach Bill Armstrong, the Midshipmen compiled a 7–1 record, shut out three opponents, and outscored all opponents by a combined score of 130 to 56. Bill Armstrong (coach)
Richard "Bill" Armstrong (July 16, 1873 – August 4, 1938) was an American college football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the College of William & Mary in 1896, the United States Naval Academy from 1897 to 1899 and the Hampton Institute—now known as Hampton University—in 1912, compiling a career college football coaching record of 24–8. At the Naval Academy, Armstrong also coached Rowing (sport), rowing from 1897 to 1899. Armstrong was born on July 16, 1873, at his grandfather's home in Saybrook, Connecticut. His parents, William Nevins Armstrong and Frances Morgan Armstrong, were residents of Hampton, Virginia. His uncle, Samuel C. Armstrong, was an American Civil War general who founded Hampton University. Armstrong attended the Banner School in Hampton and Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, before moving on to Yale University from which he graduated from Sheffield Scientific School in 1895. Worden Field
Worden Field is a large grass field located on the campus of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. First mentioned in 1890, the field served as the home stadium for the academy's Midshipmen football team from that year through 1923, replaced by Thompson Stadium in 1924. Since the early 1900s, the field has hosted all of the academy's various yearly parades and many of its drills. It has progressively grown smaller, due to the addition of buildings and roads within the academy. The field is bordered on all four sides by small academy roads. On two of its sides, it is surrounded by officers' quarters and is bounded by a parking lot and the Severn River on its other two borders. It has rows of bleachers located along its south side and has long contained a small gazebo on its east side. The 1898 Princeton Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Princeton University as an independent during the 1898 college football season. The team compiled an 11–0–1 record, shut out 11 of 12 opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 266 to 5. Art Hillebrand was the team captain. There was no coach. There was no contemporaneous system in 1898 for determining a national champion. However, Princeton was retroactively named as the national champion by one selector, Parke H. Davis, a Princeton alumnus. Harvard finished with an 11–0 record and was named as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, and National Championship Foundation.
