1898 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1898 municipal election was held December 12, 1898. In previous elections, an entire town council had been elected at once for a one-year term; 1898 marked the beginning of staggered aldermanic terms, such that half of the six aldermen would be elected each year to two-year terms. The mayor continued to be elected annually. Because in the previous election all six aldermen had been elected to a one-year term, it was still necessary to elect six aldermen. However, in order to set up the staggered terms, three were to be elected to one-year terms and three to two-year terms. In addition to the city council, five public school trustees and four private school trustees were elected. Edmonton Town Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. In the 2010 election, Edmonton was divided into 12 wards each electing one councillor. Thomas Hourston
Thomas Hourston (February 12, 1854 – April 11, 1905) was a politician from Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Hourston was born in Birsay, Orkney, Scotland and emigrated to Canada as a young man. He settled in Edmonton, at the time just a pioneer settlement. Once in Edmonton, he became manager of Norris & Carey, the store co-owned by Edward Carey. He and William Humberstone operated a brickyard in 1881.Edmonton Bulletin, March 14, 1881 He later opened a fur store and started the area's first dairy farm. In 1881 he married Maria Annal; they had two children, one of whom died in infancy. In 1896 he was elected to Edmonton Town Council as an alderman, finishing fourth of nine candidates in an election in which the top six candidates were elected Plurality block voting. Alex Taylor (Edmonton)
Alexander Taylor (May 17, 1853 – February 12, 1916) was a Canadian entrepreneur, inventor and politician. He is credited as being one of the founders of the city of Edmonton. Taylor was born in on May 17, 1853, in Ottawa, Ontario, and came to Edmonton in 1877. Shortly after his arrival in Edmonton, Taylor established the first telegraph, telephone, and electricity systems. Taylor asked the Bell Telephone Company to provide services in 1883. Alex Taylor, Dominion Telegraph Agent, brought the first two telephones made of Spanish mahogany, and asked store owner Henry William McKenney of St. Albert to keep the device in St. Albert. Taylor, who, at the time was working for the Dominion Telegraph and Signal Service proposed running a telephone line from his office to St. Albert, Alberta. Colin Strang (politician)
Colin Ferrie Strang (June 25, 1850 – December 10, 1900) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, and an alderman on Edmonton Town Council. Biography Strang was born in 1850 in Toronto to Struthers Strang, originally from Scotland and Janet Ferrie. He was educated in Hamilton. After a period working for hardware dealers W. McGivern & Co., in 1871 he moved to Winnipeg, where he worked as a bookkeeper (eventually as the head of his own accounting office) until moving to Edmonton in 1883. He became Edmonton's leading city accountant, and also worked as bank manager for Lafferty & Moore in 1890 and as business manager for the Moore and MacDowell sawmill in 1893. He was part owner of Ross Bros., a hardware firm. In 1892 he ran for alderman on Edmonton's first town council. He finished first of fourteen candidates (the top six were elected). Thomas Bellamy
Thomas Bellamy (June 6, 1853 – October 11, 1926) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Bellamy was born at Canada West, which would later be the province of Ontario. The son of an English immigrant, he entered the woodworking industry after finishing school. After returning to farming briefly, he moved to Manitoba where established an agricultural product dealing business and later worked for the Massey Harris agricultural supply company. His employment with that company would bring him to Edmonton where he continued to work for them until he left to start his own business, the Bellamy Company, which manufactured agricultural products, establishing himself as a prominent Edmonton businessperson. Involved with civic affairs upon his arrival in Edmonton, Bellamy would serve terms on the school board, and eventually city council, being first elected in 1895. Phillip Heiminck
Phillip Heimink (May 17, 1849 – September 11, 1922) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Heiminck was born in Simcoe, Ontario, and moved to Winnipeg in 1870. There he married Isabella Green in 1873 and was involved in mercantilism before moving to Edmonton in 1881. In 1883 he moved to Fort Saskatchewan for ten years, returning to Edmonton in 1893. Upon his return, he engaged in real estate, building among other things the so-called "Heiminck Block" in downtown Edmonton. James Ross (Alberta Politician)
James Ross (August 14, 1851 – June 21, 1936) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Ross was born August 14, 1851, in Toronto. He received his apprenticeship in tinsmithing and worked as a journeyman. He moved to Edmonton in 1878 and established a tinshop in 1882. In 1883, he created the Ross Brothers general hardware store with his brother, Frederick. They sold the business in 1912. He was director of the Western Canadian Vinegar Company and Vice President of the Alberta Milling Company. James Ross married Ellen McBeath of Edmonton; the pair had seven children. He was active with the Freemasons, Methodist Church, and the Liberal Party of Alberta. In 1892, Ross ran for alderman on Edmonton's first town council. The 1897 municipal election was held December 13, 1897. This was the last election to elect a full town council for a one-year term, as the 1898 election was conducted under a staggered system. The election was to elect the town council (consisting of a mayor and six aldermen, each elected for a one-year term), five trustees for the public school division and four trustees for the separate school division. Richard Secord (July 19, 1860 – January 12, 1935) was a politician in western Canada, a member of the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories, a municipal councillor in Edmonton, and a candidate for the House of Commons of Canada. Early life Secord was born in Brant, Canada West, on July 19, 1860. He was a great-grandnephew of War of 1812 heroine Laura Secord. He was educated in Brant, and graduated with honours from Brantford Collegiate Institute. He came to Edmonton by way of Chicago and Winnipeg, arriving September 1, 1881. Joseph Henri Picard
Joseph Henri Picard (February 18, 1857 – May 23, 1934) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Picard was born in Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec on February 18, 1857. He apprenticed as a carpenter before coming west in 1884 to Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, Fort Qu'Appelle and then Regina, Saskatchewan, Regina. In Calgary, he met Father Albert Lacombe, who suggested to him that he move to Edmonton, which he did in 1887. Once in Edmonton, he opened a general store, Larue & Picard; it was sold in 1907 when both he and his partner retired. In 1903, he married Martine Voyer. The couple had two sons.
