American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. Neil Snow
Neil Worthington Snow (November 10, 1879 – January 22, 1914) was an American athlete. He competed in American football, baseball, and track and field at the University of Michigan from 1898 to 1902. He was selected as a first-team All-American football player in 1901 and as the most valuable player in the 1902 Rose Bowl, a game in which he scored five touchdowns. He was posthumously inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1960. Early years Snow was born into a wealthy family in Detroit, and attended local Central High School. While in high school, Snow was an exceptional bowler, competing in the Peninsular and Junior leagues and leading his league in average one years. He was also a boxer of "considerable prowess". Allen Steckle
Allen Chubb Steckle (July 1872 – March 4, 1938) was an American football player and coach. He played tackle for the University of Michigan from 1897 to 1899 and was selected as an All-American in 1898. Steckle served as the head football coach at the Nevada State University—now known as the University of Nevada, Reno—from 1901 to 1903 and Oregon State University, known then as Oregon Agricultural College, from 1904 to 1905, compiling a career head coaching record of 16–14–2. In 1903, his Nevada State Sagebrushers team, drawn from a school with 80 students, defeated the California Golden Bears. Early years Steckle was born in July 1872 at Freeman, Michigan. William Cunningham (American Football)
William Ralph Cunningham (July 13, 1872 – September 1957) was an All-American football center for the Michigan Wolverines football team of the University of Michigan. Cunningham was born at Volant, Pennsylvania in July 1872. His father, Valentine Cunningham, was a native of Grove City, Pennsylvania. Cunningham was a 5-foot, 9-inch, 180-pound native of Grove City, Pennsylvania who played center for the University of Michigan Wolverines from 1897 to 1899. Chosen as an All-American in 1898, he was the first University of Michigan football player to be so honored. The 1898 Wolverines went 10-0 and won the Western Conference (now known as the Big Ten Conference) championship. William Caley
William Henry "Big Bill" Caley (July 1873 – January 15, 1918) was an American football player, lawyer, and mine operator. He played college football for the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1893 to 1895 and for the University of Michigan from 1896 to 1898. With runs of 75 and 80 yards in 1894 and 1895, he set the all-time Colorado Buffaloes record for longest rushing play – a record that was not broken for nearly 40 years. He was also the second leading scorer on the undefeated 1898 Michigan Wolverines football team that won the university's first Western Conference (now known as the Big Ten Conference) football championship. Patrick John "Kangaroo Kicker" O'Dea (17 March 1872 – 5 April 1962) was an Australian rules and American football player and coach. An Australian by birth, O'Dea played Australian rules football for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). In 1898 and 1899, O'Dea played American football at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the United States, where he excelled in the kicking game. He then served as the head football coach at the University of Notre Dame from 1900 to 1901 and at the University of Missouri in 1902, compiling a career college football record of 19–7–2. Following his Australian Rules and American Football careers, O'Dea deliberately disappeared from the public eye, however he helped popularise Australian rules football in the United States as a participation sport while working in San Francisco by training schoolchildren in the kicking game. Caspar Whitney
Caspar William Whitney (September 2, 1864 – January 18, 1929) was an American author, editor, explorer, outdoorsman and war correspondent. He originated the concept of the All-American team in college football in 1889 when he worked for ''Harper's Magazine''. Biography Caspar Whitney was the son of John Henry Whitney (1833-1869) and Amelia D. Goldermann, born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was educated at Saint Mathew's College in California. During the Spanish–American War, Whitney submitted articles from the front in Cuba. At the Battle of Las Guasimas, he accompanied General Young's 1st and 10th (Regular) Cavalry.
