1897–98 Small Heath F.C. Season
The 1897–98 Football League season was the 17th season of competitive association football and 6th season in the Football League played by Small Heath Football Club, an English football club based in Birmingham. They finished in sixth place in the 16-team division. Having failed to gain exemption from the qualifying rounds of the 1897–98 FA Cup, they entered the competition in the third qualifying round and lost that opening match to Burslem Port Vale. In local cup competitions, they lost to Walsall F.C., Walsall in the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup, Birmingham Cup, were eliminated by West Bromwich Albion in the first round of the Birmingham Charity Cup, Mayor of Birmingham's Charity Cup, and reached the semi-final of the Staffordshire Senior Cup where they again lost to West Bromwich Albion. Alfred Jones (football Manager)
Alfred Jones ( fl. 1885–1915) was Small Heath's first secretary-manager. Appointed in 1892, the year of their admission to the Football League, he oversaw the club winning the inaugural Football League Second Division championship, promotion to the First Division the following year, and two further promotions before his retirement in 1908. Jones worked as a manufacturer of scales. He began acting as unpaid secretary for Small Heath Alliance F.C. in 1885, the year they turned professional. That season they reached the semi-final of the FA Cup, which brought money into the club and broadened popular awareness of it. He supervised their entry into organised league football in the Football Alliance which started in 1889, and their subsequent invitation to join the newly formed Second Division of the Football League. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. Denny Hodgetts
Dennis Hodgetts (28 November 1863 – 25/26 March 1945), commonly known as Denny Hodgetts, was a footballer in the early years of professional football in England. Signed as a Youth player for Mitchell St George's in 1878 and played for three years. When 17 he signed for Great Lever for the 1881-82 season. In 1882 he returned to Mitchell St. George's F.C. where he stayed for four years. Hodgetts signed for Aston Villa in February 1886. The following year he scored the first goal in Aston Villa's first FA Cup final triumph. In 1895 he collected another FA Cup winners medal with Villa. Hodgetts was also a key member of the Football League title-winning sides of 1894 and 1896. Season 1888-89 Hodgetts was described as powerful and alert and good with both feet. Charlie Izon
Charles John Izon (1872 – after 1897) was an English professional footballer who made 32 appearances in the Football League playing for Small Heath and Walsall. Izon was born in Stourbridge, Worcestershire. His forward play with Old Hill Wanderers and Halesowen earned him a good reputation, and there was strong competition in the Birmingham area for his signature. He joined Second Division champions Small Heath in September 1893, and made his debut in the Football League on 16 September, scoring a hat-trick in a 4–0 win at home to Walsall Town Swifts. John Thomas Jones (24 October 1874 – 13 September 1904) was an English professional footballer who made 35 appearances in the Football League playing for Small Heath. Playing career Jones was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire. He played football for local clubs Sandwell Albion, Dudley and Halesowen before joining Small Heath, newly promoted to the First Division of the Football League, in late 1894. He made his debut on 23 February 1895 in a 2–1 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion, as a replacement for regular outside right Jack Hallam. In the 1895–96 season he played more frequently, in his preferred position of inside forward, and scored six league goals in 14 appearances. The club was relegated via the test match system, despite Jones's hat-trick in the last test match, an 8–0 defeat of Manchester City. Southern Football League
The Southern League is a men's football competition featuring semi-professional clubs from the South and Midlands of England. Together with the Isthmian League and the Northern Premier League it forms levels seven and eight of the English football league system. The structure of the Southern League has changed several times since its formation in 1894, and currently there are 84 clubs which are divided into four divisions.
