1897 VFL Season
The 1897 VFL season was the inaugural season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest-level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season ran from 8 May to 4 September, comprising a 14-round home-and-away season followed by a three-week finals series featuring the top four clubs. Eight Victorian Football Association (VFA) clubs – , , , , , , and – featured in the inaugural season after seceding from the VFA in 1896. Essendon won the inaugural premiership after winning all three of its finals matches, with Geelong finishing as runners-up with two wins. Geelong won the minor premiership by finishing atop the home-and-away ladder with an 11–3 win–loss record. Geelong's Eddy James and Melbourne's Jack Leith tied for the leading goalkicker medal as the league's leading goalkickers. Eddy James
Edwin Ernest James (14 February 1874 – 16 September 1937) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong in the years before and following the formation of the VFL. Football James started his career as a backman, playing a game at 15 after Geelong were short for players. He moved to the forward line in his return in 1892, and in 1895 finished with 24 goals to be equal third in the VFA goalkicking. In the inaugural VFL season in 1897, he kicked 22 goals in the home-and-away season to share the Leading Goalkicker Award with Jack Leith; incidentally, this is the lowest number of goals to have ever earned this award, and will likely hold this record in perpetuity due to the high-scoring nature of the modern game. George Stuckey
George Stuckey (6 July 1871 – 15 March 1932) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and captained the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Stuckey played as both a wingman and half back during his career in the VFA and VFL and was the first captain of Essendon in the VFL; and, when Essendon won the (inaugural) VFL premiership in 1897, he also became the first VFL premiership captain. He remained captain until the end of the 1900 season and was a premiership player again in 1901. During his career, he represented Victoria at interstate football. Hugh Gavin
Lodovic Hugh Gavin (25 October 1878 – 13 November 1940) was an Australian rules footballer who played 108 games for the Essendon Football Club in the years following the formation of the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). Arthur Robert Smith (16 February 1872 – 20 July 1961) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the years leading up to and following the formation of the Victorian Football League (VFL). Playing career Smith, who was recruited from Richmond, was Collingwood's main target up forward during his career. Wally O'Cock
Wally O'Cock (17 June 1875 – 14 June 1951) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League (VFL). O'Cock joined Carlton in the VFA in 1896, and was their top goalscorer for the year. He continued with the club after its move to the newly created VFL, making his debut in Round One in 1897. Later that year, O'Cock was unable to obtain medical clearance before a game against Melbourne and played under the name "Alfred Wallace", kicking Carlton's only two goals in a 28-point loss. Charles Coles (footballer)
Charles John Clarke Coles (26 December 1878 – 20 August 1942) was an Australian rules footballer who played with the Geelong Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was a skilled follower with a nice kick. However, his career was ruined through a broken leg "Broken Leg" is a song written and recorded by Australian indie rock band Bluejuice. Norman Waugh
Norman James "Norm" Waugh (10 May 1874 – 6 August 1934) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL). In the first year of competition, he became one of the club's and leagues first premiership players, during the 1897 VFL season, under the captaincy of George Stuckey. Waugh made his debut against in Round 1 of the season, at Corio Oval. Waugh was also Essendon's first-ever List of Essendon Football Club leading goalkickers, leading goalkicker in a VFL season. Richard Frederick Waugh (1 December 1869 – 23 June 1919) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football competition in Australia operated by the Australian Football League (AFL) as a second-tier, regional, semi-professional competition. William Joseph McSpeerin (25 September 1874 – 3 June 1943) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
