1897 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Football Season
The 1897 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season was the college football games played by the members schools of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association as part of the 1897 college football season The season began on October 2. Conference play began on October 9 with Georgia shutting out Clemson 24–0 in Athens. After the Sewanee game, Coach R. G. Acton's Vanderbilt Commodores claimed the program's first ever conference title. This was followed by a challenge met by the other southern team to claim a championship, South Atlantic school Virginia; which claims seven prior championships of the South. The game ended a 0–0 tie. Said Coach Acton, "It was the best game ever played in the South." Vanderbilt held all opponents scoreless. The Texas Longhorns averaged the most points per game in the conference. Richard Von Albade Gammon (December 4, 1879 – October 31, 1897) was a University of Georgia football fullback who died after injuries sustained in a collegiate football game. Biography Richard Von Albade Gammon was born December 4, 1879 in Rome, Georgia. He grew up on downtown Rome's 3rd Avenue and was a very talented athlete. Allen Jeardeau
Allen Wilson Jeardeau (April 1, 1866 – April 10, 1900) was an American college football and college baseball coach. He served as the head football coach at the Platteville Normal School—now the University of Wisconsin–Platteville—in 1895 and 1898 and at Louisiana State University (LSU) from 1896 to 1897. In 1896, his first season with the LSU Tigers, Jeardeau led the team to a 6–0 record and a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) championship. He was also the head coach of the LSU Tigers baseball team in 1898. Jeardeau was a graduate of the Platteville Normal School and a student at Harvard University. The 1897 LSU Tigers football team represented Louisiana State University (LSU) during the 1897 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season. Due to a ban the university had placed on athletic teams traveling off campus, McCants' 1897 team only played one game, a 6–0 victory over the Tuscaloosa Athletic Club. The 1897 Alabama Crimson White football team (variously "Alabama", "UA" or "Bama") represented the University of Alabama in the 1897 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season. The team was led by head coach Allen McCants, in his first season, and played their home games at The Quad in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In what was the sixth season of Alabama football, the team finished with a record of one win and zero losses (1–0, 0–0 SIAA). In the spring of 1895, the University Board of Trustees passed a rule that prohibited athletic teams from competing off-campus for athletic events, and as such only one game was scheduled for the season. The Nashville Garnet and Blue football team represented the University of Nashville in intercollegiate football competition. The program was active from 1889 until 1909, when it was discontinued. The Eastern Kentucky Colonels football program represents Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) in college football, through the 2020-21 season as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), and competes at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level.
