The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) was one of the first collegiate athletic conferences in the United States. Twenty-seven of the current Division I FBS (formerly Division I-A) football programs were members of this conference at some point, as were at least 19 other schools. John Gere Jayne
John Gere Jayne (May 12, 1874 – September 6, 1920) was an attorney and American football and baseball coach for the Sewanee Tigers of Sewanee: The University of the South. Early years Jayne was the son of Samuel Carver Jayne and Hattie Gere. Samuel was the cashier at the First National Bank. Hattie's mother was the aunt of Grover Cleveland. He attended Princeton University, where he got his law degree. He was a pitcher and outfielder on the baseball team. He graduated in June 1897. Sewanee Jayne's first year coaching Sewanee football was the worst in its history. McGee Field
McGee Field/Harris Stadium (officially Benjamin Humphreys McGee Field at Eugene O. Harris Stadium) located in Sewanee, Tennessee is the home of the Sewanee Tigers football and lacrosse teams. It was dedicated as McGee Field at homecoming on October 22, 1977. Before then the stadium was known as Hardee Field, named for Lt. General William J. Hardee of the Confederate States of America. Thus sometimes the field is also called Hardee-McGee Field. McGee Field is the oldest stadium in the South still in use. The Sewanee Tigers football team represents Sewanee: The University of the South in the sport of American football. The Tigers compete in NCAA Division III as members of the Southern Athletic Association. Three Sewanee Tigers are members of the College Football Hall of Fame: Henry Seibels, Henry D. Phillips, and Frank Juhan. History The Sewanee Tigers were pioneers in American intercollegiate athletics and possessed the Deep South's preeminent football program in the 1890s. Ellwood Wilson is considered the "founder of Sewanee football." Their 1899 football team had perhaps the best season in college football history, winning all 12 of their games, 11 by shutout, and outscoring their opponents 322-10. Five of those wins, all shutouts, came in a six-day period while on a trip by train. The 1897 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season was the college football games played by the members schools of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association as part of the 1897 college football season The season began on October 2. Conference play began on October 9 with Georgia shutting out Clemson 24–0 in Athens. After the Sewanee game, Coach R. G. Acton's Vanderbilt Commodores claimed the program's first ever conference title. This was followed by a challenge met by the other southern team to claim a championship, South Atlantic school Virginia; which claims seven prior championships of the South. The game ended a 0–0 tie. Sewanee () is a census-designated place (CDP) in Franklin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,535 at the 2020 census.
