1896–97 FC Basel Season
The FC Basel 1896–97 season was their fourth season since the club's foundation on 15 November 1893. Emanuel Schiess was the club's chairman, but he stood down at the club's AGM and Charlie Volderauer was elected as new chairman. He was the club's third chairman in their history, following Roland Geldner (1893–1896) and Schiess. FC Basel played their home games in the Landhof, in the Wettstein neighborhood of Kleinbasel (lesser Basel). The Swiss national championships had not yet been called to into life. Overview The idea of a Swiss national championship came to review with the Swiss Football Association, that had been founded the previous year and of which Basel and local rivals Old Boys were a member. Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been Swiss national champions 20 times, Swiss Cup winners 13 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Hermann Schneider (footballer)
Hermann Schneider (4 January 1877; date of death unknown) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played as forward. Football career Schneider joined the Basel first team during their 1896–97 season, two years before the Swiss Serie A was founded. In his first season he played seven test games. In his second season he played 10 times and was the team's top scorer with six goals. The first official Swiss championship season 1898–99 was played as a knock out competition, divided into three regional groups, an east (region Zürich), a central (regional north-west Switzerland) and west group ( Romandy). The winners of each group played the finals in a round-robin tournament. Basel played in the central group semi-final against Old Boys. Because the game was drawn, one goal each, it required a replay. This replay was held in the Stadion Schützenmatte on 18 December 1898. John Tollmann
Kurt Johann 'John' Tollmann (29 June 1863 – 1924) was a Swiss businessman and owned his own company in Basel, John Tollmann & Co, a tea company and had tea plantations in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Tollmann was founder member of FC Basel. He was long-time footballer in their first team and played as goalkeeper in the 1890s. He also acted as referee and was the first secretary-treasurer of the Swiss Football Association. Football career Tollmann was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England had seen the new football game. After a newspaper advert, there was a meeting on 15 November 1893 and the Fussball Club Basel was founded. Tollmann attended the founders meeting and joined the team that evening. The first football match that the club held was on 10 December against the football team of the club RTV/Realschüler-Turnverein (secondary school student gymnastics club). Rudolf Schwarz (footballer)
Rudolf Schwarz (born 30 May 1881) was a Swiss footballer who played as midfielder in the late 1890s. Football career Schwarz joined FC Basel's first team for their 1897–98 season. The official Swiss national championship had not yet been called into life and so the team played only friendly games. Schwarz played his first game for the club in the friendly away game on 17 October 1897 as Basel were defeated 3–7 by Zürich. Schwarz played in all ten of the club's friendly games that season. Eric Mory
Eric Mory (born 17 April 1879) was a Swiss footballer who played as striker or midfielder during the 1890s and early 1900s. Football career FC Basel was founded on 15 November 1893 and Mory joined the club about three years later, during their 1896–97 season. Mory played his first game for the club in the away game on 8 November 1896 as Basel were defeated 1–2 by Grasshopper Club. Mory stayed with the club for two seasons. During the first season he played in six of the team's seven matches and in the second he played in nine out of ten matches. The last game that Mory played for Basel was on 8 May 1898 as Basel won 2–0 against FC Fortuna Zürich. His teammate John Tollmann acted as referee in that match.
