1896 Oregon Agricultural Aggies Football Team
The 1896 Oregon Agricultural Aggies football team represented Oregon Agricultural College (now known as Oregon State University) as an independent during the 1896 college football season. In this fourth season of their existence, the Aggies were briefly coached by Tommy Code before he was sent home to California as an "unnecessary expense," to be replaced as coach by two of the college's professors. During the season the Aggies compiled a 1–2 record and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 22 to 10. The Aggies defeated Fort Vancouver (18–0), but lost two games against Oregon (0–2, 4–8). A. J. Simpson was the team captain. Tommy Code
Thomas Kimball Code (April 13, 1873 – January 28, 1956) was an American college football player at Stanford University who also was a football coach at Oregon State University, then known as State Agricultural College. Career Code grew up in San Francisco, California where he attended Lowell High School. He went on to play college football at Stanford where he was the quarterback in the first Big Game against Cal. 1896 College Football Season
The 1896 college football season had no clear-cut champion, with the ''Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book'' listing Lafayette and Princeton as having been selected national champions. Lafayette finished with an 11–0–1 record while Princeton had a 10–0–1 record. In the second game of the season for both teams, Lafayette and Princeton played to a scoreless tie. Both teams had signature wins: Lafayette defeated Penn 6–4, giving the Quakers their only loss of the season, while Princeton defeated previously unbeaten Yale, 24–6, on Thanksgiving Day in the last game of the season. Princeton was retroactively named the 1896 national champions by the Billingsley Report, the Helms Athletic Foundation, the Houlgate System, and Lafayette and Princeton were named national co-champions by the National Championship Foundation and Parke Davis. Fort Vancouver
Fort Vancouver was a 19th century fur trading post that was the headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company's Columbia Department, located in the Pacific Northwest. Named for Captain George Vancouver, the fort was located on the northern bank of the Columbia River in present-day Vancouver, Washington. The fort was a major center of the regional fur trading. Every year trade goods and supplies from London arrived either via ships sailing to the Pacific Ocean or overland from Hudson Bay via the York Factory Express. Supplies and trade goods were exchanged with a plethora of Indigenous cultures for fur pelts. Furs from Fort Vancouver were often shipped to the Chinese port of Guangzhou where they were traded for Chinese manufactured goods for sale in the United Kingdom. The Oregon Ducks football program is a college football team for the University of Oregon, located in the U.S. state of Oregon.
