1896 New Year Honours
The New Year Honours 1896 were appointments by Queen Victoria to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by members of the British Empire. They were published on 1 January 1896. Queen Victoria
Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until Death and state funeral of Queen Victoria, her death in 1901. Richard Morris Dane
Sir Richard Morris Dane (1854–1940) was a British administrator in India and China. Life He was the son of Richard Martin Dane M.D. (1813–1901) and his wife Sophia Eliza Griffiths; Louis William Dane, Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab, was his brother. He was educated at Kingstown, Dublin, and entered the Indian Civil Service in 1872. s:The Indian Biographical Dictionary (1915)/Dane, Sir Richard Morris Dane served as Inspector-General of Salt Revenue in India from 1907 to 1909. He was later posted to China, in the Sino-Foreign Salt Administration, with a corresponding role from 1913 to 1918. Arriving there under the administration of Yuan Shikai, he set up a system on the Indian Civil Service model, recruiting district inspectors from many nationalities. New Year Honours
The New Year Honours is a part of the British honours system, with New Year's Day, 1 January, being marked by naming new members of orders of chivalry and recipients of other official honours. A number of other Commonwealth realms also mark this day in this way. The awards are presented by or in the name of the reigning monarch, currently King Charles III or his vice-regal representative. British honours are published in supplements to the ''London Gazette''. Honours have been awarded at New Year since at least 1890, in which year a list of Queen Victoria's awards was published by the ''London Gazette'' on 2 January. Henry Alfred Alford Nicholls
Sir Henry Alfred Alford Nicholls (27 September 1851 – 9 February 1926) was a physician, disease specialist, horticulturist, zoologist and legislator in, and publicist for Dominica for over 50 years. He published on a wide variety of topics and was awarded a knighthood for his services just before his death. Biography Nicholls was born on 27 September 1851 in Spitalfields and baptised at nearby Christ Church on 31 December. He was the eldest of five children of Elizabeth Ann Pitkin and Thomas William Nicholls, a surgical instrument manufacturer. Raleigh Grey
Sir Raleigh Grey (24 March 1860 – 10 January 1936) was a British coloniser of Southern Rhodesia who played an important part in the early government of the colony. Early career Grey, the great-grandson of 1st Earl Grey, was educated at Durham School and Brasenose College, Oxford. In 1881 he joined The Inniskillings (6th Dragoons) and saw service in the Anglo-Zulu War. When the war ended he was in command of the Bechuanaland Border police, and in the Matabeleland rebellion of 1893 he commanded a column of the British army. William Holborow
William Hillier Holborow (23 December 1841 – 10 July 1917) was an Australian politician. Early life He was born in Sydney to linen draper Daniel Holborow and his wife Mary. He was educated privately and became a storekeeper at Richmond. On 27 July 1864 he married Amelia Town; they had ten children. He formed the Richmond Volunteer Rifles as a lieutenant in 1870, becoming a captain in 1871, a lieutenant colonel in 1881 and a colonel in 1896. Political career An inaugural Richmond alderman from 1872, he was mayor from 1874, to 1875. He was again elected mayor in 1878, 1879, and 1880. Admiral The Honourable Sir Assheton Gore Curzon-Howe, (10 August 1850 – 1 March 1911) was a British naval officer who served as Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet from 1908 to 1910. Philip Fysh
Sir Philip Oakley Fysh (1 March 1835 – 20 December 1919) was an English-born Australian politician. He arrived in Tasmania in 1859 and became a leading merchant in Hobart. He served two terms as premier of Tasmania (1877–1878, 1887–1892) and became a leader of the colony's federation movement. Sir Rashbehari Ghosh (23 December 184528 February 1921) was an Indian politician, lawyer, social worker and philanthropist. Early life Rashbehari Ghosh was born on 23 December 1845 at Torkona village in Khandaghosh area in Purba Bardhaman district in Bengal Presidency. He attended Burdwan Raj Collegiate School and Presidency College, Kolkata. He obtained a first class in the MA examination in English. Major-General Sir Thomas Dennehy (1829–1915), born in County Cork, Ireland and educated in Paris, was an administrator in British India. Beilby Lawley, 3rd Baron Wenlock (12 May 1849 – 15 January 1912) was a British soldier, Liberal politician and colonial administrator who was the Governor of Madras from 1891 to 1896. Early life Lawley was the son of Beilby Lawley, 2nd Baron Wenlock and his wife Lady Elizabeth Grosvenor, daughter of Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster.
