The 1896 Army Cadets football team represented the United States Military Academy in the 1896 college football season. In their first and only season under head coach George P. Dyer, the Cadets compiled a 3–2–1 record and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 93 to 45. The Army–Navy Game was not played in 1896. The Plain (West Point)
The Plain is the parade field at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The flat terrain of the Plain is in contrast to the varied and hilly terrain of the remainder of the campus. The Plain rises approximately above the Hudson River and has been the site of the longest continually occupied U.S. Army garrison in America since 1778. In its early years, the entire academy was located on the Plain and it was used for varying activities ranging from drill and mounted cavalry maneuvers to an encampment site for summer training to a sports venue. United States Military Academy
The United States Military Academy (USMA), also known metonymically as West Point or simply as Army, is a United States service academy in West Point, New York. It was originally established as a fort, since it sits on strategic high ground overlooking the Hudson River with a scenic view, north of New York City. The 1896 college football season had no clear-cut champion, with the ''Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book'' listing Lafayette and Princeton as having been selected national champions. Lafayette finished with an 11–0–1 record while Princeton had a 10–0–1 record. In the second game of the season for both teams, Lafayette and Princeton played to a scoreless tie. Both teams had signature wins: Lafayette defeated Penn 6–4, giving the Quakers their only loss of the season, while Princeton defeated previously unbeaten Yale, 24–6, on Thanksgiving Day in the last game of the season. West Point is the oldest continuously occupied military post in the United States. The 1896 Princeton Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Princeton University as an independent during the 1896 college football season. The team finished with a 10–0–1 record, shut out 10 of 12 opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 266 to 5. Franklin Morse was the head coach, and Garrett Cochran was the team captain. There was no contemporaneous system in 1896 for determining a national champion. The 1896 Yale Bulldogs football team represented Yale University in the 1896 college football season. The Bulldogs finished with a 13–1 record under first-year head coach Sam Thorne. The team recorded nine shutouts and won its first 13 games by a combined 212 to 29 score. It then lost its final game against rival Princeton by a 24–6 score.
