The 1894–95 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. History The scoring was tweaked again this season, to give greater emphasis on try-scoring. A 'goal' - a try and conversion - remained 5 points; but the try was now greater value than the conversion (3pts to 2pts). Glasgow District beat Edinburgh District in the Inter-City match. The gate money was estimated at £150. 1893–94 Scottish Districts Season
The 1893–94 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. History Glasgow District beat Edinburgh District in the Inter-City match. The ''Glasgow Herald'' makes the mistake of assuming every Inter-City fixture was an annual fixture in its report; in concluding that the Inter-City Glasgow - Edinburgh match started in 1858. The East v West match was scheduled for February 1894. However it was played, as normal, at the end of January. A joint Glasgow-Edinburgh side was selected for the first time. The team was to play a Rest Of Scotland side. It was noted that the weather was so bad for the South v Cumberland match that few spectators turned up; and the pitch was almost unplayable. The 1895–96 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. History Glasgow District and Edinburgh District fought out a nil - nil draw in the Inter-City match. This was the first draw in the fixture since 1879; and the first nil-nil since January 1876 (back when the Inter-City was a twice-a-season format). The North of Scotland played Edinburgh Wanderers at the end of the season. It was intended to be a XV a side match, North had selected their side, but it seems likely that Wanderers only turned up with XI players so a XI a side match had to be played instead. Glasgow District was a Scottish amateur rugby union team which now plays as the professional provincial side Glasgow Warriors. Founded in 1872 it was a select provincial amateur rugby union team that drew its players mainly from the Greater Glasgow area, as well as others from the rest of the west of Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Strathclyde regional council area. Historically the Glasgow District team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. In total, the collection consists of 660,000 bound volumes and 370,000 reels of microfilm containing tens of millions of newspapers with 52,000 titles on 45 km of shelves. Charles Nicholl
Charles "Boomer" Bowen Nicholl (19 June 1870 – 9 July 1939) was a Welsh international rugby union forward who played club rugby for Cambridge University and Llanelli. Nicholl played for Wales on fifteen occasions during the 1891 and 1896 Home Nations Championships, and was part of the historic 1893 Triple Crown winning team. Nicholl was recognised as an 'uncompromising'Griffiths (1987), pg 4:5 forward and was described as "The most distinguished member of the least distinguished college ... fond of smoking and a connoisseur of exhilarating beverages, in which strength rather than delicacy of bouquet is a predominant feature"Smith (1980), pg 82. Hamilton Crescent
Hamilton Crescent is a cricket ground in the Partick area of Glasgow, Scotland, which is the home of the West of Scotland Cricket Club. Hamilton Crescent hosted the first international football match, between Scotland and England, played on 30 November 1872, which ended in a goalless draw, and was watched by a crowd of 4,000. A plaque on the wall of the clubhouse was placed to commemorate the match in 2002 by Mr John C McGinn, President of the Scottish Football Association. Further international matches were held here in 1874 and 1876, before being moved to the first Hampden Park. Graham Findlay
Graham Findlay (10 November 1864 – 5 December 1924) was a Scottish rugby union player. He later became an international referee and was the 23rd President of the Scottish Rugby Union. Rugby Union career Amateur career Findlay played for West of Scotland. He was still playing for the club in 1888 when he turned out for West of Scotland against Hawick and Wilton. The South of Scotland District is a Scottish amateur rugby union team which plays in the amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship. It draws its players from the South of Scotland, mainly the Scottish Borders where there has always been a proud tradition of rugby union. Historically the South team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. After rugby union became a professional sport in 1995, the team was replaced in 1996 by the new Border Reivers team based in the same geographical area as the South and who wore the same colours as the old team. When the professional Border Reivers provincial side folded in 1998, the South amateur district was resurrected and renamed Scottish Borders.
