Oscar II
Oscar II (Oscar Fredrik; 21 January 1829 – 8 December 1907) was King of Sweden from 1872 until his death in 1907 and King of Norway from 1872 to 1905. Oscar was the son of King Oscar I and Queen Josephine. He inherited the Swedish and Norwegian thrones when his brother died in 1872. Oscar II ruled during a time when both countries were undergoing a period of industrialization and rapid technological progress. His reign also saw the gradual decline of the Union of Sweden and Norway, which culminated in its dissolution in 1905. In 1905, the throne of Norway was transferred to his grandnephew Prince Carl of Denmark under the regnal name Haakon VII. When Oscar died in 1907, he was succeeded in Sweden by his eldest son, Gustaf V. Oscar II is the paternal great-great-grandfather of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Jørgen Leonard Firing
Jørgen Leonard Firing (9 March 1894 – 7 March 1977) was a Norwegian politician for the Conservative Party. He was born in Horten. He was elected to the Norwegian Parliament from the Market towns of Vestfold county in 1945, but was not re-elected in 1949. On the local level, Firing was a member of Horten city council from 1925 to 1931 and 1947 to 1963. Outside politics he worked as an engineer. He was a member of the board of the local newspaper from 1945 to 1965 and the local savings bank from 1951 to 1965. ''Hvem er hvem?'' ( en, Who is Who?) was a Norwegian book series, presenting facts about notable persons from Norway. The first edition was issued in 1912, and the 14th edition came in 1994. Ernst Ullring
Ernst Ullring (18 June 1894 – 10 October 1953) was a Norwegian naval officer and inventor who is known for his contributions during the Second World War. Ullring was born in Horten to Ole Edvard Ullring and Svenda Fogelstrøm, and graduated as naval officer in 1916. He invented a series of naval instruments, including the direction finder called ''Ullrings peileskive''. During the Norwegian Campaign in 1940 he was in command of the destroyer HNoMS ''Sleipner'', and he served as military governor of Svalbard 1942–1943. In 1944 and 1945 he served as commodore at the Royal Naval Reserve, and was involved in the Battle of the Atlantic, including the Arctic convoys. Alv Kjøs (4 June 1894 – 14 April 1990) was a Norwegian army officer and politician for the Conservative Party. Early life and military career He was born in Løiten, the son of farmers Andreas Olsen Kjøs and Dina Baardsdatter. Having achieved his ''examen artium'' academic certification in 1914, he graduated from the upper section of the Norwegian Military Academy in 1917. Upon graduating, he joined the infantry of the 2nd Division as a first lieutenant. He first served in the 6th Infantry Regiment, before transferring to the 5th Infantry Regiment in 1921. Carl Søyland (May 19, 1894 – December 1978) was a Norwegian born, American author, reporter, editor and community leader. Background Carl Søyland was born in Bergen, Norway. He was the son of Tønnes James Søyland (1859–1917) and Kristiane Nilsen (1868–1953). Søyland grew up in Flekkefjord in Vest-Agder, Norway. Ludvig Irgens-Jensen
Paul Ludvig Irgens-Jensen (13 April 1894 – 11 April 1969) was a Norwegian twentieth-century composer. Irgens-Jensen studied piano with Nils Larsen while a philology student at the University of Oslo. He began composing in 1920, and the radical nature of his work attracted some interest. Irgens-Jensen's oratorio '' Heimferd'' (for solo choir and orchestra) won first prize in a national competition, and is considered a national monument of sorts for Norway. The song ''Altar'' is one of his most familiar works. During the Second World War, Irgens-Jensen composed several songs and orchestral works to patriotic texts; due to the restrictions imposed by the Nazis, these works had to be distributed anonymously and illegally.
