The 1893 Wyoming Cowboys football team represented the University of Wyoming as an independent during the 1893 college football season. In its first season of college football, the team played only one game, defeating Cheyenne High School by a 14–0 score. Fred Hess was the team's coach. There was no team captain. Fred Hess (coach)
Fred Hess (September 3, 1944, Abington, Pennsylvania – October 27, 2018) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. Formative years Born in Abington Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania on September 3, 1944, Fred Hess was raised in New Jersey and studied at Trenton State College. He also studied composition at, and performed in, The Festival at Sandpoint in 1990. His early experiences included studies with saxophonist Phil Woods, performances with bandleader Fred Waring, and composing music for the world premiere of a Sam Shepard play. Career As a composer, Hess's influences encompass avant-garde classical sources, as well as Anthony Braxton and the members of the AACM. He moved to Boulder, Colorado, in 1981, where he founded the Boulder Creative Music Ensemble. He then completed further studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, taking his doctorate in composition in 1991. The University of Wyoming (UW) is a public land-grant research university in Laramie, Wyoming. It was founded in March 1886, four years before the territory was admitted as the 44th state, and opened in September 1887. 1893 College Football Season
The 1893 college football season was the season of American football played among colleges and universities in the United States during the 1893–94 academic year. The 1893 Princeton Tigers football team, led by captain Thomas Trenchard, compiled a perfect 11–0 record, outscored opponents by a total of 270 to 14, and has been recognized as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, and National Championship Foundation. Despite Yale's loss to Princeton, one selector ( Parke H. Davis) recognized the Bulldogs as the national champion. All eleven players selected by Caspar Whitney and Walter Camp to the 1893 All-America college football team came from the Big Three (Princeton, Yale, and Harvard). The Cheyenne High School at 2810 House Avenue in Cheyenne, Wyoming is a Late Gothic Revival-style building which was built in 1921. It has also been known as Central High School and as Laramie County School District No.1 Administration Building and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. It is a three-story Collegiate Gothic style building which is in plan. Its walls are reinforced concrete with brick faces. It was designed by architect William Dubois and built by contractor John W. Laramie is a city in and the county seat of Albany County, Wyoming, United States. The population was estimated 32,711 in 2019, making it the third-largest city in Wyoming after Cheyenne and Casper. This is a list of seasons completed by the Wyoming Cowboys football team. Representing the University of Wyoming, the Cowboys compete in the Mountain Division of the Mountain West Conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA Division I (NCAA), Division I Division I (NCAA)#Football Championship Subdivision, FBS.
