1893–94 FC Basel Season
FC Basel was started by an advertisement placed by Roland Geldner in the 12 November 1893 edition of the Basler ''national newspaper'', requesting that a football team be formed and that anyone who wished to join should meet up the following Wednesday at 8:15 in the restaurant Schuhmachern-Zunft. Eleven men attended the meeting, generally from the academic community, founding Fussball Club Basel on 15 November 1893. All of them had spent some time in England and during that time found their way into football. Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been Swiss national champions 20 times, Swiss Cup winners 13 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Basel have competed in European competitions every season since 1999–2000. They have qualified for the Group stages of the Champions League more times than any other Swiss club – a total of seven times – and are the only Swiss club to have ever qualified to the Group stages directly. This is a list of seasons played by FC Basel in Swiss and European football, from the club's founding in 1893 to the present. It details FC Basel's record in each major competition entered including different divisions of the Swiss Football League, the Swiss Cup, the Swiss League Cup, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and various UEFA competitions. Although the first season of Swiss football occurred in 1897–98, FC Basel did not take part until the following season in 1898–99. Fussball Club Basel 1893 has a long and illustrious history, that spans the period from 1893 to the present day. Having competed at the highest level of football in Switzerland for most of this time, FCB currently play in the Swiss Super League. The club was founded on 15 November 1893. At first the club played their home games in the Landhof stadium. During the mid- 1960s Basel they played their games in St. Jakob Stadium which was demolished in 1998. During the construction of the new stadium, between 1998 and 2001, the Stadion Schützenmatte was the clubs temporary home ground. Since 2001 Basel play home games at St. Jakob-Park, which is currently the largest club stadium in Switzerland. Wilhelm Götz (date of birth unknown) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel in the 1890s. Football career FC Basel was founded on 15 November 1893 and Götz joined the club a few months later during their 1893–94 season. Georges Geldner
Georg Wilhelm 'Georges' Geldner (born 7 July 1872) was a Switzerland, Swiss Association football, footballer who played for FC Basel in the 1890s. Football career During a visit to England, his brothers Roland Geldner and Max Geldner they had seen the new football game. They placed an advert in the local newspaper to arrange a meeting about founding the Football Club Basel. Max attended the founders meeting and joined the team that evening. Roland was appointed as the club's first president. Georges joined the team a few days later. Geldner trained with the team and eleven days after the club was founded the first game took place. Not much has been passed down from the first game that the FCB played on 26 November 1893. The club members met at the Landhof and played a game among themselves. Emanuel Schiess
Dr Georg Emanuel Schiess (* 6 July 1875 in Basel; † 13 May 1948 in Basel) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played mainly as forward, but also as midfielder. Football career Schiess joined Basel a few weeks after the club's foundation during their 1893–94 season. Team mate Charles Volderauer, as businessman, had good connections and used them from the very beginning. As early as June 1894, Volderauer organised the journey to visit Strassburger FV. Schiess travelled with the team by train to Strasbourg and played their first match against a foreign team, which ended with a 0–8 defeat. In the following season, Schiess scored his first goal for his club in the Stadion Schützenmatte on 2 December 1894. Carl Albert Hintermann
Carl Albert Hintermann (2 November 1876 – 1945) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played in the position as defender and as midfielder. Between the years 1893 and 1896 Hintermann played a total of 4 games for Basel without scoring a goal. These games were friendly games. This Swiss domestic league was not founded until 1896.
