1892 Perth Colonial By-election
The 1892 Perth colonial by-election was a by-election held on 12 January 1892 for the Western Australian Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly seat of electoral district of Perth, Perth, which covered the city of Perth, Western Australia, Perth and its immediate environs. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of the sitting member, Dr Edward Scott (Australian politician), Edward Scott. Scott had been elected at the 1890 Western Australian colonial election, inaugural elections of the Assembly on 10 December 1890, and served both as the member and the List of Mayors and Lord Mayors of Perth, Mayor of Perth. He travelled to England following the completion of his mayoral term, and by mid-November 1891, it had become clear he intended to resign his parliamentary seat, and he sent a telegram to the Speaker of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Speaker and a letter to his lawyer, Mr E. Midland Railway Of Western Australia
The Midland Railway of Western Australia (MRWA) was a railway company that built and operated the Midland line in Western Australia. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange. Although having its headquarters in London, it had no association with the English Midland Railway. History In December 1883, John Waddington representing a syndicate of English capitalists, proposed to Governor Broome to build a line from York via Northam, Newcastle, Bejoording, New Norcia and along the Berkshire Valley to Geraldton under a land grant scheme. Lancel De Hamel
Lancel Victor de Hamel (10 September 1849 – 25 November 1894) was a publisher, solicitor and politician who represented the people of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Early life De Hamel was born on 10 September 1849 in London. His father, Felix John de Hamel, was a solicitor in Stoke Newington, London. Lancel followed in his footsteps and after completing his training worked as a solicitor for the Board of Trade, at Newcastle upon Tyne. He was actively involved in local politics as a conservative and a captain of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. He married Marion Eugenie de Manuel Hammond in 1877 in Northumberland and in the 1880s de Hamel embarked on an unsuccessful expedition to find buried treasure on a pacific island. Murray Street, Perth
Murray Street is one of four main east-west roads within the Perth central business district (CBD). History The street, the central portion of which has become a pedestrian mall, was named after Sir George Murray, Secretary of State for War and the Colonies from 1828 to 1830. It is the one main road in Perth that has an eastern ending at a churchthe Roman Catholic St Mary's Cathedral; the other major churches in the CBD are on the sides of the city streets. The western end of Murray Street also once had a church with St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church sitting on Havelock Street opposite the end of Murray Street. Murray Street was extended to Outram Street in 1937 and St Patrick’s was demolished. Murray Street was later extended further west to Thomas Street. William Loton
Sir William Thorley Loton (11 June 1838 – 22 October 1924), was an Australian politician. Thomas George Anstruther Molloy (4 October 1852 – 16 February 1938) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly for the electorate of Electoral district of Perth, Perth from 1892 until 1894, and thereafter became a perennial candidate, unsuccessfully standing for parliament 14 times. He also served two terms as the Lord Mayor of Perth, Mayor of Perth, from 1908 to 1909 and from 1911 to 1912. Electoral District Of West Perth
The Electoral district of West Perth was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. The district was named for its location immediately to the west of the central business district of Perth. West Perth was created as one of the initial 30 single-member districts, and one of only six in the Perth-Fremantle area, and its first member, elected in 1890, was Timothy Quinlan, a Perth city councillor and publican at the Shamrock Hotel. Quinlan became embroiled in a controversy regarding provision of state aid to private schools, which he and fellow Catholic MLAs Thomas Molloy and Alfred Canning supported. The Catholic Vicar General, Father Anselm Bourke, established the Education Defence League with their assistance. Timothy Quinlan
Timothy Francis Quinlan KSS (18 February 1861 – 8 July 1927) was an Irish-born Australian politician who represented the electorates of West Perth and Toodyay in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly between 1890 and 1894, and 1897 and 1911, respectively. Quinlan was also Speaker of the Assembly for a period of time between 1905 and 1911. Born in Borrisokane, County Tipperary, Ireland on 18 February 1861, Timothy Quinlan emigrated to Western Australia with his parents in 1863. Orphaned in 1865, he was raised by Joseph Thomas Reilly, and educated at the Cathedral Boys School in Perth. He worked for John Monger at York from 1875, and then for Alexander McRae at Roebourne. He was also involved in the pearling industry for about two years. In 1882, Quinlan leased the Shamrock Hotel in Perth from Daniel Connor, an expiree convict who had become one of the wealthiest men in the colony. Geraldton is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. Geraldton was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 colonial election. The district is based on the eponymous regional city. Labor held throughout most of the twentieth century, Geraldton has since become a seat that has changed hands regularly in the last two decades. Geography The district has always been based on the regional coastal city of Geraldton. Electoral reform ahead of the 2008 state election necessitated an increase in the district's enrolment and thus an expansion of its boundaries, as it did for all non-metropolitan districts.
