1892 Merionethshire County Council Election
The second election to the Merionethshire County Council was held in March 1892. They were preceded by the 1889 election and followed by the 1895 election. Overview of the result The Liberals held their large majority with most seats being uncontested. Unopposed Returns At the inaugural election the majority of seats had been contested, and in many cases the majorities were very small. By 1892, however, most wards were uncontested. Contested Elections There were a large number of contested elections and the majorities were small in most instances. In most cases there were contests between Liberal and Conservative candidates. Merionethshire County Council
Merionethshire County Council was a local authority in Wales from 1889 until its abolition in 1974. Overview The administrative county of Merionethshire and its local authority, the Merionethshire County Council was established in 1889 under the Local Government Act 1888. The first elections were held in January 1889. The county was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974. A successor authority, Meirionnydd District Council, existed between 1974 and 1995. As a result of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, which came into force on 1 April 1996, it became part of the new unitary authority of Gwynedd Council. The first election to the Merionethshire County Council was held on 18 January 1889. It was followed by the 1892 election. The county was divided into numerous single member wards with two councillors elected to represent some of the urban areas. Dolgellau
Dolgellau () is a town and community in Gwynedd, north-west Wales, lying on the River Wnion, a tributary of the River Mawddach. It was the traditional county town of the historic county of Merionethshire ( cy, Meirionnydd, Sir Feirionnydd) until the county of Gwynedd was created in 1974. Dolgellau is the main base for climbers of Cadair Idris and Mynydd Moel which are visible from the town. Dolgellau is the second largest settlement in southern Gwynedd after Tywyn and includes the community of Penmaenpool. Etymology The name of the town is of uncertain origin, although ' is Welsh for "meadow" or "dale", and ' (soft mutation of ') means "grove" or "spinney", and is common locally in names for farms in sheltered nooks. This would seem to be the most likely derivation, giving the translation "Grove Meadow". It has also been suggested that the name could derive from the word ', meaning "cell", translating therefore as "Meadow of onks'cells", but this seems less likely considering ... Samuel Pope
Samuel Pope, KC, JP, DL (11 December 1826 – 22 July 1901) was an English barrister. Born at Manchester, Pope was eldest son of Samuel Pope, a merchant of London and Manchester, by his wife Phebe, daughter of William Rushton, merchant, of Liverpool. After private education he was employed in business, and in his leisure cultivated in debating societies an aptitude for public speaking. Coming to London, he studied at London University, entered at the Middle Temple on 13 November 1855, and was called to the bar on 7 June 1858. Deeply interested in politics, he unsuccessfully contested Stoke-upon-Trent as a Liberal in the following year. For a few years he practised with success in his native town, but removed to London in 1865. In the same year, and again in 1868, he unsuccessfully contested Bolton. William Robert Maurice Wynne
William Robert Maurice Wynne of Peniarth, Merionethshire (15 February 1840 – 5 February 1909), often referred to as W.R.M. Wynne, was a Conservative politician and prominent landowner who also made a notable contribution to the cultural life of Wales by donating the Peniarth Manuscripts to the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth. Wynne also served as Conservative MP for Merioneth from 1865 to 1868. He stood down in 1868 when facing likely defeat by the Liberal candidate David Williams, following the Second Reform Act. Early life Wynne was the eldest son of William Watkin Edward Wynne of Peniarth and Mary Slaney, daughter of Robert Aglionby Slaney MP. He was educated at Eton and later served in the Scots Guards. Blaenau Ffestiniog
Blaenau Ffestiniog is a town in Gwynedd, Wales. Once a slate mining centre in historic Merionethshire, it now relies much on tourists, drawn for instance to the Ffestiniog Railway and Llechwedd Slate Caverns. It reached a population of 12,000 at the peak development of the slate industry, but fell with the decline in demand for slate. The population of the community, including the nearby village Llan Ffestiniog, was 4,875 in the 2011 census: the fourth most populous in Gwynedd after Bangor, Caernarfon and Llandeiniolen. The population not including Llan is now only about 4,000. Etymology and pronunciation The meaning of Blaenau Ffestiniog is "uplands of Ffestiniog". Henry Haydn Jones
Sir Henry Haydn Jones (27 December 1863 – 2 July 1950) was a Welsh Liberal Party politician. Upbringing Henry (sometimes known as "Harry") Haydn Jones was born in Ruthin, Wales. He was the son of Joseph David Jones (1827–70), a schoolmaster in the town and a respected Welsh musician and composer. After the early death of his father, Haydn Jones was brought up by uncles at Towyn (now called Tywyn) where he was educated at the Board School & Academy. In 1903 he married Barbara Annie Gwendolen Davies Jones, daughter of Lewis D. Jones, who was Welsh-born and the original agent for Price Waterhouse & Co. in the U.S. Politics In 1889, Haydn Jones was elected as one of the first members of Merionethshire County Council, representing the Towyn Urban District. Sir Osmond Williams, 1st Baronet
Sir Arthur Osmond Wynn Williams JP DL (17 March 1849 – 28 January 1927) was a Welsh Liberal Party politician. Early life He was born at Llanfihangel-y-Traethau, Merionethshire, Wales on 17 March 1849. He was the eldest surviving son of Anne Louisa (née Loveday) Williams and David Williams, M.P. for Merioneth from 1868 to 1869. Among his siblings was brother Dr. Leonard Williams, the prominent physician and writer, and sister Alice Williams, the painter and welfare worker. Williams was educated at Eton. Career He was elected as Liberal M.P. for Merioneth at the 1900 general election and held the seat until 1910. Williams served as Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for Caernarvonshire, Chairman of Quarter Sessions for Merioneth, and constable of Harlech Castle. Meirionnydd District Council Elections
Meirionnydd is a coastal and mountainous region of Wales. It has been a kingdom, a cantref, a district and, as Merionethshire, a county. Kingdom Meirionnydd (Meirion, with -''ydd'' as a Welsh suffix of land, literally ''Land adjoined to Meirion'') was a sub-kingdom of Gwynedd, founded according to legend by Meirion (derived from the Latin name Mariānus), a grandson of Cunedda, a warrior-prince who brought his family to Wales from the ' Old North' (northern England and southern Scotland today), probably in the early 5th century. His dynasty seems to have ruled there for the next four hundred years. The kingdom lay between the River Mawddach and the River Dovey, spreading in a north-easterly direction.
