1892 Auburn Tigers Football Team
The 1892 Auburn Tigers football team represented Auburn University in the 1892 college football season. It was the first college football team fielded by the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, now known as Auburn University. The squad was first coached by George Petrie. Auburn shut out Georgia Tech, 26–0, just two days after being shut out by North Carolina, 64–0. The team finished the season with a record of 2–2. Auburn University (AU or Auburn) is a public land-grant research university in Auburn, Alabama. Deep South's Oldest Rivalry
The Auburn–Georgia football rivalry is a college football rivalry game between the Auburn Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs. The two teams first played each other in 1892, and the rivalry has been renewed annually since 1944 for a total of 126 games as of 2021. Because it is the oldest rivalry still contested between teams in the Deep South, the series is referred to by both schools as the "Deep South's Oldest Rivalry" (although the first football game played in the Deep South was Wofford vs. Furman in 1889). Auburn–Georgia Tech Football Rivalry
The Auburn–Georgia Tech football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Auburn Tigers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Auburn leads the series 47–41–4. Series history The first game took place on November 25, 1892, in Atlanta, Georgia. They played in the SIAA until it was defunct in 1922, before joining the Southeastern Conference. Georgia Tech left the SEC in 1963, playing as an independent until joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1980. Despite no longer being conference opponents, they played annually until 1987. The rivalry was renewed for a home and home series played in 2003 and 2005. There are no future games currently scheduled. The ''Albuquerque Journal'' is the largest newspaper in the U.S. state of New Mexico. History The ''Golden Gate'' newspaper was founded in June 1880. In the fall of 1880, the owner of the ''Golden Gate'' died and Journal Publishing Company was created. Journal Publishing changed the paper name to ''Albuquerque Daily Journal'' and issued its first edition of the ''Albuquerque Daily Journal'' on October 14, 1880. George Petrie (American Football)
George Petrie (April 10, 1866 – September 6, 1947) was an American scholar and educator who played a crucial role in the development of Auburn University. From 1887 until his retirement in 1942, Petrie held various positions at Auburn, including professor of history and Latin, head of the History Department, and dean of the Graduate School. Petrie also organized and coached Auburn's first football team in 1892. Petrie is the first Alabamian to earn a Ph.D. degree. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Virginia in 1887 and a Ph.D. in "history, political economy, and jurisprudence" from Johns Hopkins University in 1890. The 1892 Georgia Bulldogs football team represented the Georgia Bulldogs of the University of Georgia during the 1892 college football season and was its first football team ever fielded. The team completed its inaugural season with a 1–1 record. The Bulldogs played their first inter- collegiate football game in history against and won by a final score of 50–0. Georgia's second and final game of 1892 was against Auburn, which marked the beginning of a rivalry that would later become known as the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. Auburn, then known as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, counts the February 22, 1893, game versus Alabama towards the 1893 season, while Alabama counts it toward their 1892 season. Head coach D. M. Balliet led Auburn to a 32–22 victory in the game. George Roy Harvey coached the four games that Auburn played the following fall.
