The 1890–91 United States Senate elections were held on various dates in various states. As these United States Senate, U.S. Senate elections were prior to the ratification of the Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, Seventeenth Amendment in 1913, senators were chosen by State legislature (United States), state legislatures. Senators were elected over a wide range of time throughout 1890 and 1891, and a seat may have been filled months late or remained vacant due to Gridlock (politics), legislative deadlock. In these elections, terms were up for the senators in Classes of United States senators, Class 3. The Republican Party (United States), Republican Party lost four seats, though still retaining a slim majority. United States Senate
The United States Senate is the upper chamber of the United States Congress, with the House of Representatives being the lower chamber. Together they compose the national bicameral legislature of the United States. The composition and powers of the Senate are established by Article One of the United States Constitution. The Senate is composed of senators, each of whom represents a single state in its entirety. Each of the 50 states is equally represented by two senators who serve staggered terms of six years, for a total of 100 senators.
