Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. The ''Great Norwegian Encyclopedia'' ( no, Store Norske Leksikon, abbreviated ''SNL''), is a Norwegian-language online encyclopedia. The online encyclopedia is among the most-read Norwegian published sites, with more than two million unique visitors per month. Paper editions 1978–2007 The ''SNL'' was created in 1978, when the two publishing houses Aschehoug and Gyldendal merged their encyclopedias and created the company Kunnskapsforlaget. Up until 1978 the two publishing houses of Aschehoug and Gyldendal, Norway's two largest, had published ' and ', respectively. Gunnar is a male first name of Nordic origin (''Gunnarr'' in Old Norse). Marius Ulfrstad
Marius Moaritz Ulfrstad (11 September 1890 in Ellingsøya - 29 October 1968 in Oslo) was a composer, organist and music teacher. His compositions were well known at his time, but are largely forgotten today. Biography Ulfrstad was the son of teacher Mauritz Ulvestad (1858-1919) and Lisa Kvalstein (1861–97). After middle school exam and teacher education Ulfstad started at the Conservatory of Music in Kristiania and completed an organist examination there in 1911. In 1912 he settled in Ålesund as a singer and organist, but studied later composition in Germany, France, and Italy. In 1914 he became organist in Kragerø, and in 1917 he moved to Kristiania, where he worked as a music analyst, conductor, and music teacher. Ulfrstad debuted as a composer in 1919, the same year as he was first married to the singer Ragnhild Albertha Hovde (1895-1978), the marriage was canceled in 1940. Bjørn Talén
Bjørn Talén (8 September 1890 – 12 July 1945) was a Norwegian opera singer (tenor). Biography Bjørn Talén was born in Kristiania (Oslo). His parents were Constantin Waldemar Talén (1857–1902) and Maren Johanne Johnsen (1867–1920). His father was an engineer who became director of the Oslo Tramway. His parents were both art and theater enthusiasts and knew many of the contemporary artist. He took his final exams at the Oslo Cathedral School in 1908 he took the 1910 science matriculation at Halling school. He graduated from the Norwegian Military Academy in 1913. He subsequently studied singing in Milan, Naples, London and Paris. He debuted in the Aula at the University of Oslo in October 1914. From 1918–20, he was with the Opera Comique in Oslo. Pauline Hall (composer)
Pauline Margrete Hall (2 August 1890 – 24 January 1969) was a Norwegian composer and music critic. She was the founding chairwoman of Ny Musikk (1938–1961) and served as president of the International Society for Contemporary Music (1952–1953). Background Pauline Hall was born at Hamar in Hedmark, Norway. She was the daughter of Isak Muus Hall (1849–1914) and Magdalena Catharina Agersborg (1854–1934). Her father was a pharmacist who operated several pharmacies in Hamar, at Kabelvåg in Lofoten and in Tromsø. From 1908 she studied piano with composer and pianist Johan Backer Lunde (1874–1958) in Kristiania (now Oslo).
