1890 Wyoming Gubernatorial Election
The 1890 Wyoming gubernatorial election was held on September 11, 1890, as the first gubernatorial election for the newly admitted state of Wyoming. Incumbent Territorial Governor Francis E. Warren ran for re-election as the Republican nominee against former Territorial Governor George W. Baxter, the Democratic nominee. Warren defeated Baxter by a decisive margin and became the first popularly elected Governor of Wyoming. However, shortly after Warren's term began as governor, he was elected to the U.S. Senate by the newly constituted state legislature, and he resigned on November 24, 1890. Accordingly, Secretary of State Amos W. Barber became governor, and a special gubernatorial election was held in 1892. George White Baxter (January 7, 1855 – December 18, 1929) was an American politician who served as territorial governor of Wyoming from November 11, 1886 – December 20, 1886. The 1892 Wyoming gubernatorial special election was held on November 6, 1892. Republican Governor Francis E. Warren, who was elected in 1890, resigned several weeks into his term after being elected to the U.S. Senate by the state legislature, elevating Secretary of State Amos W. Barber to the governorship and triggering a special election for the balance of Warren's term. The Republican Party nominated banker Edward Ivinson for Governor and Democrats nominated former State Representative and former Rawlins Mayor John E. Osborne. In an election that was largely defined by the Johnson County War, in which cattle companies, supported by the state's Republican establishment, attacked alleged rustlers and homesteaders in the Powder River Country. Evanston, Wyoming
Evanston is a city in and the county seat of Uinta County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 12,359 at the 2010 census. It is located near the border with Utah. History Evanston was named after James A. Evans, a civil engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad. Another source maintains it is named for John Evans, second Governor of the Territory of Colorado. The town was founded during the construction of the First transcontinental railroad. The railroad arrived in the area in November 1868, and Harvey Booth opened a saloon/restaurant in a tent near what is now Front Street. By December the rails had reached Evanston and the first train arrived December 16. However, orders were later handed down by the railroad managers to move the end of the line 12 miles west, to Wasatch. Within three days, most all of Evanston had moved to Wasatch, it appeared that Evanston would become another "end of the tracks" town. Wyoming () is a state in the Mountain West subregion of the Western United States.
