1890 Kansas Jayhawks Football Team
The 1890 Kansas Jayhawks football team represented the University of Kansas as an independent during the 1890 college football season. In their first season of existence, the Jayhawks had no official coach. Starting center Will Coleman (American football), Will Coleman served as an unofficial coach for the team. In just three games of the season, the Jayhawks offense scored 33 points while the defense allowed 52 points and ended with a record of one win and two losses. This was the first season for Kansas Jayhawks football and the first game against Baker marked the first time college football was played in the state of Kansas. The Jayhawks' 14–12 victory over Baker Wildcats football, Baker on December 8, was the first victory in the program's history. Schedule References

Will Coleman (American Football)
William Julius Coleman (March 8, 1869 – September 2, 1934) was an American college football player and coach, as well as a collegiate rower and track and field athlete. He was the first coach for the Kansas football team, when he served as a player-coach in 1890. He also competed on the KU rowing team, winning the 1 mile 2 man rowing competition along with Charles Orton Lasley in 1892 with a time of 6:04. Coleman was a track and field athlete at Kansas as well. He ran both the 100-yard dash and the mile, coming in second in the 100-yard dash and first in the mile with a time of 5 minutes and 19.5 seconds at the 1892 official KU Field Day. 1890 College Football Season
The 1890 college football season was the season of American football played among colleges and universities in the United States during the 1890–91 academic year. The 1890 Harvard Crimson football team compiled a perfect 11–0 record, outscored opponents by a total of 555 to 12, and was recognized as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, National Championship Foundation, and Parke H. Davis. In the Midwest, the Baker Methodists defeated the Kansas Jayhawks by a score of 22–9 in the first college football game played in Kansas. In the South, Vanderbilt Commodores defeated Nashville (Peabody), 40–0, in the first college football game played in Tennessee. Baldwin City is a city in Douglas County, Kansas, United States, about south of Lawrence. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 4,826. The city is home to Baker University, the state's oldest four-year university. History Early history Baldwin City began as a trail stop on the Santa Fe Trail named Palmyra. The small community consisted of a harness shop, blacksmith, hotel, lawyer, drug store, two doctors and a tavern.
