The 1888 World Championship was an exhibition football match that took place in Crosshill (today part of Glasgow), Scotland, on 19 May 1888 between the winners of the Scottish Cup, Renton, and the English FA Cup, West Bromwich Albion. The Football World Championship, also known as the United Kingdom Championship or the International Club Championship, was a exhibition association football match played between the English and Scottish club champions on a regular, but not annual, basis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with varying degrees of press attention and public interest. Perhaps the most widely publicised at the time under the 'World Championship' name was the 1888 event between Renton and West Bromwich Albion, while in the modern age interest from historians has drawn more attention to matches involving Sunderland, particularly the 1895 match. Neil McCallum (footballer, Born 1868)
Cornelius "Neil" McCallum (3 July 1868 – 5 November 1920) was a Scottish footballer who played as an outside right for Renton, Celtic, Blackburn Rovers, Nottingham Forest, Notts County, Heanor Town and Scotland. McCallum had the distinction of being part of the Renton team that defeated West Bromwich Albion in a challenge match in May 1888, billed as the "World Championship". By now also an international but still a teenager, later in the same month he joined the newly formed Celtic and scored the club's first ever goal in their inaugural match, a 5–2 win over Rangers. When he won the Scottish Cup during his second spell at Celtic in 1892 alongside former Renton teammate James Kelly, they became the first players to win the competition with two different clubs, having also been victorious with their old club in 1888. John Campbell (footballer, Born 1869)
John Campbell (19 February 1869 – 8 June 1906) was a Scottish footballer who played as a forward, primarily for Sunderland. He was the stepbrother of Sunderland manager Robert Campbell. Club career Having won the Scottish Cup with Renton in 1888, followed by the 1888 'World Championship' a few months later, Campbell switched to English football along with teammates John Harvey and David Hannah; he made his debut for Sunderland on 18 January 1890 against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup first round; Sunderland lost the game 4–2 after extra time at Leamington Road. He played for the club from 1890 to 1897, winning three Football League championships ( 1891–92, 1892–93 and 1894–95). In each of these seasons, Campbell was the top scorer in the competition. Bob Kelso (footballer)
Robert Robison Kelso (2 October 1865 – 19 November 1950) was a Scottish footballer who played for Renton, Newcastle West End, Preston North End, Everton, Dundee, Bedminster and the Scotland national team. Career Kelso, a defender, was born in Cardross, Dunbartonshire, and began his football career with Renton where he won the Scottish Cup in 1885 and 1888 and played on the losing side in the 1886 final. He also won the '' Champions of the World'' title in 1888 when Scottish Cup holders Renton defeated English FA Cup holders West Bromwich Albion. He moved to Newcastle West End in 1888 and then to Everton the following year. He made his Everton and Football League debut on 19 January 1889 at Anfield, Liverpool against "The Invincibles", Preston North End. John Lindsay (1862–1932) was a Scottish footballer who played in the Football League for Accrington. He represented Scotland three times between 1888 and 1893. Thomas Pearson (20 May 1866 – 4 July 1918) was an English footballer who played at inside-left. Career Pearson was born in West Bromwich. John McNee (born 30 March 1866) was a Scottish footballer. He played as an inside forward in both English and Scottish football. Career Born in Renton, Dunbartonshire, McNee started his career in the village with Renton Wanderers. 1887–88 Scottish Cup
The 1887–88 Scottish Cup was the 15th season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. Renton won the competition for the second time after they beat Cambuslang 6–1 in the final. The result set a new record as the largest margin of victory in a Scottish Cup Final - a record that was equalled by Celtic in 1972 but has never been bettered. Calendar Teams All 145 teams entered the competition in the first round. First round Aberdeen Rovers, Glasgow University, Mauchline, Nithsdale and Southern Athletic received a bye to the second round.
