1887 South Sydney Colonial By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of South Sydney on 4 June 1887 because Bernhard Wise () was appointed Attorney General in the fourth Parkes ministry. Such ministerial by-elections were usually uncontested. Most of the ministry was not required to face a by-election as they had been appointed prior to the general election in February 1887. William Foster had been the Attorney General however he resigned on the ground that he had been promised an appointment to the Supreme Court and Henry Stephen had been appointed instead. Dates Result Bernhard Wise () was appointed Attorney General in the fourth Parkes ministry. Aftermath With a margin of just 40 votes, William Traill challenged the result in the Elections and Qualifications Committee. The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. William Henry Traill (7 May 1842 – 21 May 1902) was an Australian journalist and politician, commonly referred to as W. H. Traill. Henry Clarke (Australian Politician)
Henry Clarke (22 June 1822 – 22 November 1907) was an Australian businessman and politician in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Clarke was born in Maghera, County Londonderry, Ireland, he emigrated to New South Wales in 1841 and he farmed for a while at Broulee. He returned to Sydney and married Jane Rayner in 1847 and they eventually had eleven children. He and Robert Gee established a successful shipping agency and owned three ships operating between Sydney and Melbourne by 1861. In the early 1860s, he lived for a period at Bergalia station near Moruya, but returned to Sydney in 1865 and worked at his agency until 1894. Parliamentary career In 1860, he contested the seat of Eden and lost to Daniel Egan. In 1869 he re-contested Eden and won. He held the seat continually until the district was abolished in 1894 and he stood unsuccessfully for Moruya in 1894. Thomas Slattery
Thomas Michael Slattery (17 December 1844 – 25 July 1920) was an Irish-born Australian solicitor and politician. He was born in Greenane in County Tipperary to shoemaker Edward Slattery and Alice Walsh. His family arrived in Sydney in 1847 and he attended St Mary's Seminary School before becoming a junior clerk in 1864. First working for the Customs Department, he clerked for the Supreme Court of New South Wales from 1872, becoming chief clerk in 1874. In 1875, he was admitted as a solicitor, practising first in the matrimonial courts and then from 1880 privately. On 10 January 1867 he married Annie Genevieve O'Connor, with whom he had four children. His wife died in 1885 and on 23 November 1886 he married her sister Agnes Melanie O'Connor. In 1880 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Boorowa. James Garvan
James Patrick Garvan (2 May 1843 – 20 November 1896) was an Australian politician, Colonial Treasurer of New South Wales in 1889. Garvan was born in Cappagh, County Limerick, Ireland, son of Denis Bourke Garvan and Anne, Culhane. Garvan founded the North Shore Steam Ferry Co. Ltd., the City Mutual Fire Insurance Co. Charles Garland (Australian Politician)
Charles Launcelot Garland (1854 – 7 January 1930) was a New Zealand-born Australian politician and mining entrepreneur. He was the founder of the town of Leadville, N.S.W. He was born at Auckland to sea captain William Riley Garland and Nancy Turner. He was a miner from an early age, and migrated to New South Wales in 1879. Around 1882 he married Mary Newland, with whom he had a son. Garland died in Sydney in 1930, and was buried at the Gore Hill Cemetery. Business career From 1882 he was an assurance agent, and was also successful mining at Leadville, on the Palmer River in Far North Queensland, and on the Macquarie River. William Trickett
William Joseph Trickett (2 September 1843 – 4 July 1916) was a politician, Postmaster-General and solicitor in colonial New South Wales. Trickett was the son of Elizabeth Backshall and Joseph Trickett, born at Gibraltar, where his father, a civil engineer, was employed on the Government works. In 1854 he accompanied his father, who was appointed manager of the coining department of the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint, to New South Wales, where he was admitted as a solicitor in 1866. Trickett, who has been several times Mayor of the Borough of Woollahra, represented Paddington in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 18 November 1880 to 23 December 1887, when he resigned and was appointed a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council which he held until his death.
