1887 Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship
The 1887 Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship was the inaugural staging of the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Kilkenny County Board. The championship began on 3 April 1887 and ended on 17 April 1887. On 17 April 1887, Tullaroan won the championship after a 1–01 to 0–04 defeat of Mooncoin in the final. It was the first of 20 championship titles for the Tullaroan club. Championship details Overview All of the existing clubs within County Kilkenny were invited to participate in the championship, however, at the time hurling had a limited appeal and was confined to small pockets around the county. Just four teams participated: Castlecomer, the Kilkenny Working Men's Club, Mooncoin and Tullaroan. The Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the St Canice's Credit Union Senior Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Kilkenny SHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Kilkenny County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking senior clubs in the county of Kilkenny in Ireland. It is the most prestigious competition in Kilkenny hurling. Introduced in 1887 as the Kilkenny Hurling Championship, it was initially a straight knockout tournament open only to senior-ranking club teams. The championship has gone through a number of changes throughout the years, including the use of a round robin, before reverting to a straight knockout format. Erin's Own Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in 1885 and since then has been the main sporting organization in the Castlecomer area in County Kilkenny, Ireland. Erin's Own fielded teams in 11 different grades of hurling and in 7 grades of gaelic football in 2006, and is currently undertaking major development at its new ground, Canon Kearns Park.
