Robert Stockton Green
Robert Stockton Green (March 25, 1831 – May 7, 1895) was an American Democratic Party politician, who was the 27th governor of New Jersey from 1887 to 1890. He also sat for one term in the United States House of Representatives from 1885 to 1887. Early life and education Green was born in Princeton, New Jersey, the son of James S. Green and the former Isabella Williamson McCulloh. His father was U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey from 1835 to 1850. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1850. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1853 and commenced practice in Elizabeth, New Jersey. On October 1, 1857, he married the former Mary E. Mulligan. He engaged in business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a flour and grain commission merchant in 1847 and later in quarrying and manufacturing slate. He served as captain of Company G, Thirty-first Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers, from September 3, 1862, to June 26, 1863 and as sheriff of Warren County, New Jersey, from November 13, 1878, to November 15, 1881. Leon Abbett (October 8, 1836December 4, 1894) was an American Democratic Party politician and lawyer who served two nonconsecutive terms as the 26th Governor of New Jersey from 1884 to 1887 and 1890 to 1893. His official state biography refers to Abbett as "undoubtedly the most powerful person in New Jersey in the late nineteenth century" and "the first urban-oriented governor" of New Jersey.
