1885 Young Colonial Election Re-count
In December 1885 the Elections and Qualifications Committee overturned the 1885 general election for Young, in which Gerald Spring and William Watson had been declared elected, with William Watson having a margin of 2 votes over James Mackinnon. The petition made 2 main complaints (1) the returning officer at Bendick Murrell had marked the ballot papers with the electoral number of the voter, allowing anyone to ascertain how each elector had voted and (2) votes for Mackinnon were improperly rejected as informal. The members of the committee were Robert Smith (Chairman), John Burns, Henry Clarke, John Purves, George Reid, Septimus Stephen and John Sutherland. The Elections and Qualifications Committee declared that William Watson had not been elected the member for Young, however no by-election was conducted. Results Of The 1885 New South Wales Colonial Election
The 1885 New South Wales colonial election was for 122 members representing 72 electoral districts. The election was conducted on the basis of a simple majority or first-past-the-post voting system. In this election there were 35 multi-member districts returning 85 members and 37 single member districts giving a total of 122 members. In the multi-member districts each elector could vote for as many candidates as there were vacancies. 7 districts were uncontested. There was no recognisable party structure at this election. The average number of enrolled voters per seat was 1,831, ranging from East Maitland (1,018) to Canterbury (2,630). Septimus Stephen
Septimus Alfred Stephen (8 May 1842 – 28 August 1901), generally referred to as S. A. Stephen, was an Australian politician, solicitor and founding member of the law firm Stephen, Jaques and Stephen. The Stephen family is a prominent legal dynasty in Australia. He was born in Sydney, the seventh son of Sir Alfred Stephen (1802–1894), who would later become Chief Justice of NSW and Lieutenant-Governor of NSW, and his second wife Eleanor Martha . He was educated at Rev. W. H. Savigny's school and in 1858 became a solicitor's clerk, serving his articles with his brother Montagu Consett Stephen. He qualified as a solicitor in 1864 and went into partnership with his brother as Stephen and Stephen, later to become Stephen, Jaques and Stephen. John Sutherland (New South Wales Politician)
John Sutherland (16 February 1816 – 23 June 1889) was a builder and politician in colonial New South Wales. Early life Sutherland was born near Wick, Caithness in Scotland, the son of a crofter, John Sutherland, and his wife Louisa. Sutherland had little formal education and trained as carpenter. He emigrated to New South Wales as an unassisted migrant, arriving in 1838 and set himself up as a successful builder. Sutherland married Mary Ogilvie, daughter of Captain Ogilvie of Campbelltown, on 2 May 1839. They had two sons, who died young, and a daughter. In 1863 with John Frazer and William Manson he took up 287 square miles near Port Denison, Queensland. He later held another 250 square miles in the South Kennedy district as well as Lindisfarne in the North Gregory district. In 1873 with Sir Henry Parkes he took up 3,760 acres of mineral leases near Jamberoo and held another 408 under conditional purchase but failed to mine coal there. George Reid
Sir George Houston Reid, (25 February 1845 – 12 September 1918) was an Australian politician who led the Reid Government as the fourth Prime Minister of Australia from 1904 to 1905, having previously been Premier of New South Wales from 1894 to 1899. He led the Free Trade Party from 1891 to 1908. Reid was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He and his family immigrated to Australia when he was young. They initially settled in Melbourne, but moved to Sydney when Reid was 13, at which point he left school and began working as a clerk. He later joined the New South Wales civil service, and rose through the ranks to become secretary of the Attorney-General's Department. Gerald Spring
Gerald Spring (1 July 1830 – 9 November 1888) was an Australian politician, member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and Secretary for Lands in the 1880s. Spring was born in Castlemaine, County Kerry, Ireland. He was the youngest child of Francis Spring and his wife Catherine, ''née'' Fitzgerald., and a descendant of the Anglo-Irish Spring family. Gerald Spring arrived in New South Wales around 1853. Spring became chief constable at Dubbo, New South Wales in 1862 and a sheep inspector for Coonabarabran, New South Wales in 1865. Spring was elected as member for the district of Wellington in 1869 for a three-year term. On 4 December 1882, he was elected to the seat of Young and held the seat until 26 January 1887. John Purves (Australian Politician)
John Mitchell Purves (2 August 1847 – 17 September 1915) was an Australian politician. Earliy life He was born at Port Macquarie to Presbyterian clergyman Reverend William Purves and Alison Inglis Adams. He attended the University of Sydney from 1866 to 1872, receiving a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts. From 1870 to 1871 he went to England, and on his return he settled in the Clarence River district. On 27 November 1873 he married Annie Georgina Metcalfe, with whom he had three children. Political career In 1880, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Clarence, serving until his defeat in 1887. A real estate agent, he also served as a North Sydney alderman and several terms as mayor.
