1883 Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Team
The 1883 Minnesota Golden Gophers football team represented the University of Minnesota during the 1883 college football season. The season was the only season under head coach Thomas Peebles, the first coach in the history of the program. He came to the university to teach philosophy and since he had played football with distinction at Princeton University, he was recruited to coach the football team. He was described as "having a twinkling eye, a moustache, winged collars and the bearing of a scholar so that even on the field of play he looked as though he were en route to the court of St. James." Upon arrival in Northfield, Minnesota for the first game of the year, there was a dispute between the arriving players from Minnesota and the team representing Carleton College. Thomas Peebles (American Football)
Thomas Peebles (March 18, 1857 – March 10, 1938) was the father of American cheerleading and the first American football coach at the University of Minnesota, in 1883. Peebles coached the team in three games in that early season. They lost two and won one. Peebles was born in Ireland and emigrated to the United States when was 13. He graduated from Princeton University in 1882 and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota the following year. Northfield, Minnesota
Northfield is a city in Dakota and Rice counties in the State of Minnesota. It is mostly in Rice County, with a small portion in Dakota County. The population was 20,790 at the 2020 census. History Northfield was platted in 1856 by John W. North. Local legend says that the town was named for John North and a Mr. Field. The Carleton Knights football team represents Carleton College in college football at the NCAA Division III level. The program was started in 1883 and was very successful through the early 1960s, winning over 20 conference championships from 1895 to 1956. Carleton has played in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since 1983.
