1882 Nova Scotia General Election
The 1882 Nova Scotia general election was held on 20 June 1882 to elect members of the 28th General Assembly of Nova Scotia, 28th House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It was won by the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia, Liberal Party, their first of ten consecutive wins that would see them retain power until 1925. The Conservatives were the only one-term government in Nova Scotia until 2013 Nova Scotia general election, 2013 when the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party, NDP lost. The Liberals did not have a formal leader at the time of the election. After their victory, the newly-elected caucus selected William Thomas Pipes to be Premier. Yarmouth (provincial Electoral District)
Yarmouth is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. It consists of the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth and the town of Yarmouth. From 1867 to 1981, the district included all of Yarmouth County and for most of that time elected two members. John Fitzwilliam Stairs
John Fitzwilliam Stairs, also known as John Fitz William Stairs (January 19, 1848 – September 26, 1904) was an entrepreneur and statesman, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a member of the prominent Stairs family of merchants and shippers founded by William Machin Stairs (1789–1865) that included the Victorian era explorer, William Grant Stairs. Known as "John F.", he studied at Dalhousie University and then entered the management of the family's vast business empire. He was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 1879, resigning in 1882 to successfully run for election to the House of Commons of Canada in Ottawa where he served as a Conservative Party member until 1896. Stairs was president of many companies, including Nova Scotia Steel, Eastern Trust, Trinidad Electric (B.W.I.) and Royal Securities Corporation. Hector Francis McDougall (June 6, 1848 – November 27, 1914) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Cape Breton in the House of Commons of Canada from 1884 to 1900 as a Liberal-Conservative. Edward James (November 26, 1825 – October 15, 1909) was a millwright and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Lunenburg County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1878 to 1882 as a Conservative Party of Nova Scotia, Liberal-Conservative member. Simon Hugh Holmes
Simon Hugh Holmes (July 30, 1831 – October 14, 1919) was a Nova Scotia politician, publisher and lawyer. He was the fourth premier of Nova Scotia from 1878 to 1882. Holmes was born in Springville, Nova Scotia, in Pictou County. The son of Nova Scotia politician and Canadian senator John Holmes, Holmes in 1858 founded and edited the Pictou ''Colonial Standard'' as “a dedicated advocate of the principles of true Conservatism.” The paper and Holmes were advocates of Canadian confederation. Holmes remained editor until 1878 when he became Premier. Holmes attempted to win a seat in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 1867 but was defeated in a wave of anti-Confederation sentiment. He won a seat in 1871 and soon became ''de facto'' leader of the Conservative opposition.
