1881 Buffalo Mayoral Election
The Buffalo mayoral election of 1881 saw the election of former Erie County Sheriff Grover Cleveland, who defeated architect and alderman Milton Beebe by what was considered a broad margin. Cleveland would not serve out his entire term as mayor, as he would be subsequently elected Governor of New York the following year. Grover Cleveland
Stephen Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837June 24, 1908) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 22nd and 24th president of the United States from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897. Cleveland is the only president in American history to serve two non-consecutive terms in office. He won the popular vote for three presidential elections—in 1884, 1888, and 1892—and was one of two Democrats (followed by Woodrow Wilson in 1912) to be elected president during the era of Republican presidential domination dating from 1861 to 1933. Alexander Brush (February 8, 1824 – June 1, 1892) was a Scottish Mayor of the City of Buffalo, New York, serving 1870–1873 and 1880–1881. Early life He was born on February 8, 1824, at Edinburgh, Scotland. Career In 1848, he moved to Buffalo and opened a brick making business. Brush first served as Alderman for the third Ward in 1861 and reelected to that position until becoming street commissioner. He was elected mayor November 2, 1869, as the Republican candidate. He was re-elected in a special election held in February 1872. During his term the cornerstone was laid for the County and City Hall, which was not completed until early in 1876. At the end of his second term, he declined to be a candidate for re-election. In 1879, six years after retiring from public office, on November 4, 1879, he was once again elected mayor and served until 1881.
