Swedish Colony Of Saint Barthélemy
The Swedish colony of Saint Barthélemy existed for nearly a century. In 1784, one of French king Louis XVI's ministers ceded Saint Barthélemy to Sweden in exchange for trading rights in the Swedish port of Gothenburg. Swedish rule lasted until 1878 when the French repurchased the island. Background Following problems experienced by early French settlers, Saint Barthélemy was successfully colonized by French mariners in 1763. Attracted by the island's prosperity during the American Revolutionary War, Gustav III of Sweden agreed to exchange French trading rights in Gothenburg against Swedish colonization of the island. In addition to its fresh water sources, the island produced moderate amounts of cotton, sugar, cocoa, tobacco and fruits while it promised substantial revenue from trade through its natural harbour on the island's west coast. Dorothea Dunckel
Maria Dorothea Dunckel née ''Altén'' (13 March 1799 – 30 November 1878), was a Swedish poet, translator and playwright. Dunckel was born to the secretary Martin Altén and Kristina Dorotea Landwertz. She wrote her first theatre play-manuscript at the age of nine (1808), and after this, assisted her father with translations. Caroline Ridderstolpe
Caroline Johanna Lovisa Ridderstolpe, née Kolbe (September 2, 1793 – October 8, 1878) was a Swedish composer and singer. Ridderstolpe was born in Berlin, the daughter of the chapel conductor, Carl Kolbe, and in 1816 married the Swedish governor, count Fredrik Ludvig Ridderstolpe. In 1832, she published the composition ''Sju Sånger'' (Seven Songs), dedicated to the Crown princess Josephine of Leuchtenberg. In 1834, ''Hvad är Glädjen?'' (What is Joy?) was published, dedicated to her late friend Josefina Benedicks, and in 1836 ''Nya Sånger'' (New Songs). Ridderstolpe was a student of Carl Maria von Weber. Elias Magnus Fries
Elias Magnus Fries (15 August 1794 – 8 February 1878) was a Swedish mycologist and botanist. Career Fries was born at Femsjö (Hylte Municipality), Småland, the son of the pastor there. He attended school in Växjö. He acquired an extensive knowledge of flowering plants from his father. In 1811 Fries entered Lund University where he obtained a doctorate in 1814. In the same year he was appointed an associate professorship in botany. He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and in 1824, became a full professor. In 1834 he became Borgström professor (Swed. ''Borgströmianska professuren'', a chair endowed by Erik Eriksson Borgström, 1708–1770) in applied economics at Uppsala University. The position was changed to "professor of botany and applied economics" in 1851. He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1849. Anna Cervin
Anna Kristina Cervin (27 May 1878 in Holmedal, Sweden – 1972) was a Swedish artist, primarily known for her painting work. Early life Cervin was the daughter of August Cervin and Emma Brattén. Career and artistic style She studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm between 1898 and 1903, at the Académie Colarossi in Paris between 1903 and 1904, and at the Harriet Backer School in Oslo between 1907 and 1908. She worked in Sweden. At first she mainly painted still life portraits and landscape paintings, mostly with oil. She became known for her skill copying family portraits and older paintings. She was featured in several Swedish artists' exhibitions and in the exhibition ''Fem målarinnor'' in Värmlands Museum in 1948, and at Lund University's art exhibition in 1919.
