The Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium (french: Académie royale des sciences, des lettres et des beaux-arts de Belgique, sometimes referred to as ') is the independent learned society of science and arts of the French Community of Belgium. One of Belgium's numerous academies, it is the French-speaking counterpart of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts. In 2001 both academies founded a joint association for the purpose of promoting science and arts on an international level: The Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium (RASAB). Jules Pire
Jules Joseph Pire (1878-1953) was a Belgian career soldier and a leading figure in the Belgian Resistance during World War II. In this capacity, he led the Secret Army, the largest faction of the resistance, from January 1944. Career Pire was born in Hannut, Liège Province, Belgium on 29 March 1878. He enlisted in the Belgian Army in 1897, initially as a non-commissioned officer and subsequently as an officer. He was admitted to the Ecole de Guerre and served in the staff of the 3rd Brigade during the German invasion of Belgium in World War I. Transferring to the infantry, Pire rose rapidly through the ranks during the war and in its aftermath. The culmination of his career was as commander of the newly created Corps of Chasseurs Ardennais from 1936 to 1939. He retired in April 1939 as a lieutenant general, before being recalled in September when the outbreak of World War II led to the mobilisation of the Belgian Army, despite its neutral status. Émile Cammaerts
Émile Leon Cammaerts CBE (16 March 1878 in Saint-Gilles, Belgium – 2 November 1953, Radlett, Hertfordshire) was a Belgian playwright, poet (including war poet) and author who wrote primarily in English and French. Cammaerts translated three books by art, history and landscape expert John Ruskin and selected G. K. Chesterton Father Brown detective stories in ''La clairvoyance du père Brown''. He became Professor of Belgian Studies at the University of London in 1933, most of his works and papers are held there in the Senate House Library. Cammaerts is the author of a famous quotation (often mistakenly attributed to G. K. Chesterton) in his study on Chesterton: Personal life Cammaerts was born in Saint-Gilles, a suburb of Brussels. Karel Van De Woestijne
Carolus Petrus Eduardus Maria "Karel" van de Woestijne (; Ghent, 10 March 1878 – Zwijnaarde, 24 August 1929) was a Flemish writer and brother of the painter Gustave van de Woestijne. He went to highschool at the ''Koninklijk Athenaeum'' (E:Royal Athenaeum) at the Ottogracht in Ghent. He also studied Germanic philology at the University of Ghent, where he came into contact with French symbolism. He lived at Sint-Martens-Latem from April 1900 up to January 1904, and from April 1905 up to November 1906. Here he wrote ''Laetemsche brieven over de lente'', for his friend Adolf Herckenrath (1901). In 1907 he moved to Brussels, and in 1915 he moved to Pamel, where he wrote ''De leemen torens'' together with Herman Teirlinck. From 1906 he was correspondent of the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant in Brussels. Between 1920 and 1929 he taught history of Dutch literature at the University of Ghent. Gaston Salmon
Gaston Joseph Clement Marie Salmon (5 March 1878 – 30 April 1918) was a Belgians, Belgian épée, Foil (fencing), foil, and Sabre (fencing), sabre Fencing, fencer. He was Jewish. Early and personal life Salmon was born in Marcinelle, in the city of Charleroi, in Belgium, and was Jewish, his parents being Emile Telesphore Joseph and his wife Antoinette Cecile Josephe Marie (''nee'' Crispin). He married Ferdinande Betsy Ermens, and lived in Etterbeek. In World War I he enlisted in the Belgian Land Component, Belgian Army on 14 May 1917. He was killed in an air raid by a German plane at Veurne, Belgium, in April 1918 aged 40, and is buried in the Belgian Military Cemetery in Westvleteren. Henri Carton De Tournai
Henri Joseph Georges Carton de Tournai (1878–1969) was a Belgian lawyer and Catholic Party politician who was a member of the Belgian Senate and Chamber of Representatives, and a government minister. Life Carton de Tournai was born in Tournai on 19 February 1878. He studied at the Catholic University of Leuven and became a lawyer in his home town. Henri Baels
Henri Louis Baels (18 January 1878 – 14 June 1951), was a Belgian Catholic Party politician, and ship-owner from Ostend. Early life Baels was born on 18 January 1878 in Ostend, Belgium. He was the son of Julius Ludovicus Baels (1851–1896) and Delphina Alexandrina Maurics (1848–1931), who married in Ostend in January 1876. Career He eventually became Minister of Agriculture, then Minister of the Interior, and, finally, Minister of Public Works and Public Health. He crowned his career by becoming Governor of West Flanders in 1936. ''Pornocrates'', ''Pornokratès'', ''La dame au cochon'', or ''The Lady with the Pig'' is an 1878 painting by the Belgian artist Félicien Rops. It is part of the collection of the Musée provincial Félicien Rops in Namur, Belgium. The work is 75 cm high and 48 cm wide, executed in gouache and watercolor paint heightened with pastel on paper. Reproductions of the work (soft-ground etchings, heliogravures and aquatints, sometimes colored) are also held in other museum collections, such as the LACMA, the National Museum of Western Art and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Description ''Pornocrates'' is considered the best-known work by Rops. Félicien Rops
Félicien Victor Joseph Rops (7 July 1833 – 23 August 1898) was a Belgian artist associated with Symbolism and the Parisian Fin-de Siecle. He was a painter, illustrator, caricaturist and a prolific and innovative print maker, particularly in intaglio (etching and aquatint). Although not well known to the general public, Rops was greatly respected by his peers and actively pursued and celebrated as an illustrator by the publishers, authors, and poets of his time. He provided frontispieces and illustrations for Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, Charles Baudelaire, Charles De Coster, Théophile Gautier, Joris-Karl Huysmans, Stéphane Mallarmé, Joséphin Péladan, Paul Verlaine, Voltaire, and many others. Great Synagogue Of Europe
The Great Synagogue of Europe, formerly known as the Great Synagogue of Brussels (french: Grande synagogue de Bruxelles; nl, Grote Synagoge van Brussel), is the main synagogue in Brussels, Belgium which was dedicated as a focal point for European Jews in 2008. The building was designed in 1875 in a Romanesque-Byzantine style by the architect Désiré De Keyser and constructed in 1878. It is located at 32 Rue de la Régence in Brussels. The synagogue survived the Holocaust in which 25,000 Belgian Jews died. Its chief rabbi is Albert Guigui and there are approximately 15,000 persons of Jewish faith in the city (as of 2008).New status for Brussels synagogue
