United Kingdom General Election, 1874 (Ireland)
The 1874 United Kingdom general election in Ireland produced the first major electoral appearance of the Home Rule League under chairman Isaac Butt. The party's electoral success, in which it won 60 MPs, taking control of Irish electoral politics from the previously dominant Conservative and the Liberal parties was the beginning of a dominance that was to see the party as the Irish Parliamentary Party control the political landscape in Ireland until its wipeout in the 1918 general election in Ireland. However its success in 1874 was marred by the lack of unity within the party in the House of Commons, where many of its members in effect sat as Liberal MPs and voted against their own Irish colleagues. It was not until then chairman Charles Stewart Parnell in the early 1880s introduced a strict whip that the party began to exercise serious influence, and act as a unit, in Westminster. Rupert Edward Cecil Lee Guinness, 2nd Earl Of Iveagh
Rupert Edward Cecil Lee Guinness, 2nd Earl of Iveagh, (29 March 1874 – 14 September 1967) was an Anglo-Irish businessman, politician, oarsman and philanthropist. Born in London, he was the eldest son of Edward Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh. He served as the twentieth Chancellor of the University of Dublin from 1927 to 1963, succeeding his father who was Chancellor between 1908 and 1927. Biography Guinness was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a lieutenant in the 1st London Volunteer battalion, and in March 1900 volunteered for active service in South Africa during the Second Boer War, where he served with the Irish Hospital Corps. He won a seat as a Unionist MP 1908–1910 for the East End constituency of Haggerston (previously held by the Liberals) in a 1908 by-election. Arthur Gwynn
Arthur Percival Gwynn (11 June 1874 – 14 February 1898) was an Irish cricketer and rugby union player. Life Arthur Percival Gwynn was born in Ramelton, County Donegal, Ireland, the fifth son of the Very Rev John Gwynn D.D. and Josephine O'Brien.''Burke's Irish Family Records'', 1976 He was educated at St Columba's College, Rathfarnham and Trinity College Dublin. He excelled academically as well as on the sporting field. The most outgoing of the Gwynn brothers at Trinity College, he cut a handsome and dashing figure. He graduated from Trinity College in 1896, taking a double first in his finals. After completing the induction course for the Indian Civil Service in the autumn of 1897 he travelled to Burma for his first tour of duty. George Harman
George Richard Uniacke Harman (6 June 1874 – 14 December 1975) was an Irish cricketer and rugby union player. Harman was born in Crosshaven, County Cork, Ireland. A right-handed batsman, he played one first-class match for Dublin University against the MCC in May 1895. He is one of only 22 first-class cricketers to live to the age of 100. He was much more successful as a Rugby Union player, representing Ireland twice in the 1899 Home Nations Championship, playing against England and Wales.
