26th General Assembly Of Nova Scotia
The 26th General Assembly of Nova Scotia represented Nova Scotia between 1874 and 1878. John B. Dickie was chosen as speaker for the house in 1875. Mather Byles DesBrisay served as speaker from May 1875 to 1876, when he was named county judge. Isaac N. Mack became speaker in 1877. The assembly was dissolved on September 21, 1878. Inverness (provincial Electoral District)
Inverness is a provincial electoral district on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Initially created with the name "Juste-au-Corps", the electoral district of Inverness has existed in various forms since 1836. The name was changed to Inverness after lobbying by William Young. It existed continuously as Inverness County until 1981 when it was divided into Inverness North and Inverness South. It was re-formed in 1993. Following the 2012 redistribution, the district lost the Town of Port Hawkesbury to the new district of Cape Breton-Richmond. Geography The land area of Inverness is . Hiram Blanchard
Hiram Blanchard (January 17, 1820 – December 17, 1874) was a Nova Scotia lawyer, politician, and the first premier of Nova Scotia. Blanchard won election to the Nova Scotia legislative assembly in Inverness in 1859 as a Liberal. Early life Hiram Blanchard was born in West River, Nova Scotia on January 17, 1820 to father Jonathan Blanchard and mother Sarah Goggins. Hiram attended the same school as his brother, Jotham Blanchard, Pictou Academy. After graduating, Blanchard began studying law at Guysborough, Nova Scotia with future Nova Scotia House of Assembly member William Frederick DesBarres and was admitted to the bar as an attorney at age 21 in November 1841. Marrying Eliza Cantrell in 1842, he was admitted to the bar as a barrister in April 1843. Shortly after his admission to the bar, Blanchard opened up a law office in the small seaside village of Port Hood, Nova Scotia, practising in the law courts of Antigonish and Guysborough. William Berrian Vail
William Berrian Vail, (December 19, 1823 – April 10, 1904) was a Canadian businessman and politician. Vail was born in Sussex Vale, New Brunswick, the son of John Cougle Vail and Charlotte Hannah Arnold. In 1850, he married Charlotte Leslie Jones. He represented Digby County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1867 to 1874. He served in the province's Executive Council as provincial secretary. In 1874, he was elected to the 3rd Canadian Parliament as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Digby. From 1874 to 1878, he was the Minister of Militia and Defence under Alexander Mackenzie. He resigned because of a conflict of interest in the 1877 but returned to parliament in 1882 where he served as an opposition MP until he lost his seat once again in the 1887 general election. Queens is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada which existed between 1867 and 2013 and since 2021. It elects one member to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. The electoral district includes the entirety of Queens County and a small part of Annapolis. The electoral district was abolished following the 2012 electoral boundary review and was largely replaced by the new electoral district of Queens-Shelburne. William Henry Smith (Canadian Politician)
William Henry Smith, (1826 – February 1, 1890) was a lawyer and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Queen's County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1867 to 1874 as a Conservative member. Background He was born on Saint Kitts in the West Indies, the son of James Boyer Smith, who served in the house of assembly for the island. Smith came to Nova Scotia with his family in 1833. In 1849, he was called to the Nova Scotia bar. He married Mary A.E. Poyntz in 1854. He went to England in 1868 with others from the province to request a repeal of Confederation. In 1872, Smith was named Queen's Counsel. He served as probate judge for Shelburne County and registrar of probates for Queen's County.
