Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (11 May 1827 – 12 October 1875) was a French sculptor and painter during the Second Empire under Napoleon III. Life Born in Valenciennes, Nord, son of a mason, his early studies were under François Rude. Carpeaux entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1844 and won the Prix de Rome in 1854, and moving to Rome to find inspiration, he there studied the works of Michelangelo, Donatello and Verrocchio. Staying in Rome from 1854 to 1861, he obtained a taste for movement and spontaneity, which he joined with the great principles of baroque art. Carpeaux sought real life subjects in the streets and broke with the classical tradition. Carpeaux debuted at the Salon in 1853 exhibiting ''La Soumission d'Abd-el-Kader al'Empereur'', a bas-relief in plaster that did not attract much attention. Carpeaux was an admirer of Napoléon III and followed him from city to city during Napoléon's official trip through the north of France. After initially not making any co ...

The Elder Sister
''The Elder Sister'' (french: La soeur aînée) is a painting by nineteenth-century French academic artist, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, in 1869. The painting was acquired in 1992 by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, as a gift. According to the museum website, the painting was the gift of an anonymous lady in memory of her father. William-Adolphe Bouguereau
William-Adolphe Bouguereau (; 30 November 1825 – 19 August 1905) was a French academic painter. In his realistic genre paintings, he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body. During his life, he enjoyed significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors, and received top prices for his work. As the quintessential salon painter of his generation, he was reviled by the Impressionist avant-garde. By the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art fell out of favor with the public, due in part to changing tastes. In the 1980s, a revival of interest in figure painting led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He finished 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown. Life and career Formative years William-Adolphe Bouguereau was born in La Rochelle, France, on 30 November 1825, into a family of wine and olive oil merchants.Wissman ...

Mount Hood (painting)
''Mount Hood'' is an 1869 painting by Albert Bierstadt, and part of the collection of the Portland Art Museum in Portland, Oregon, in the United States. It portrays a view of the mountain in Oregon with the same name. To Bierstadt, communicating the metaphor of the monumentality of the American West was more important than making the painting geographically accurate. As a result, many features of the painting were modified from the real landscape, such as the exaggerated height Mount Hood and different landscape components that could not all be viewed at the same time in a single place along the Columbia River Gorge. An example of this is that the view of the mountain face seen in the picture is as it would be seen from Portland, but the landscape is painted as if the viewer was looking from Multnomah Falls Multnomah Falls is a waterfall located on Multnomah Creek in the Columbia River Gorge, east of Troutdale, between Corbett and Dodson, Oregon, United States. He became part of the second generation of the Hudson River School in New York, an informal group of like-minded painters who started painting along the Hudson River. Their style was based on carefully detailed paintings with romantic, almost glowing lighting, sometimes called '' luminism''. Bierstadt was an important interpreter of the western landscape, and he is also grouped with the Rocky Mountain School. Early life and education Bierstadt was born in Sol ...

Scène D'été
''Scène d'été'', ''Summer Scene'', or ''The Bathers'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by the French artist Frédéric Bazille from 1869. It is now in the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The impressionism, Impressionist painting depicts young men dressed in swimsuits having a leisurely day along the banks of the Lez (river), Lez river near Montpellier. Bazille composed the painting by first drawing the human figures in his Paris studio and then transporting the drawings to the outdoor setting. Like his earlier painting ''Réunion de famille'' (1867), ''Scène d'été'' captured friends and family members in the outdoors. ''Scène d'été'' was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1870. It may have been an inspiration for Thomas Eakins' ''The Swimming Hole'' (1885), as Eakins was in Paris in 1870 and could have seen Bazille's painting. Background After his painting ''Le Pêcheur à L'épervier'' (1868) was rejected from the Salon, Bazille was spurred to paint a larger and ...
