1857 Carmarthenshire By-election
The 1857 Carmarthenshire by-election was fought in June 1857. The by-election arose because of the death of the incumbent Conservative MP, David Arthur Saunders Davies. It was won by the Conservative candidate David Pugh, who prevailed against the opposition of many within the party. Candidates John Lloyd Davies, who had stood down as member for Cardigan Boroughs at the recent election, having faced certain defeat when opposed by Edward Pryse, was first in the field. He issued an address within days of the late member's death and emphasised his role in the public life of the county for thirty years. However, it was soon rumoured that David Pugh had the support of a large proportion of the county gentry. On 3 June, Charles Bishop convened a meeting at the Ivy Bush Hotel in Carmarthen to choose a candidate. Carmarthenshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
Carmarthenshire was a parliamentary constituency in Wales which returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom until its representation was increased to two members for the 1832 general election. At the 1885 general election, it was divided into two new single-member seats: Carmarthenshire East and Carmarthenshire West. David Arthur Saunders Davies
David Arthur Saunders Davies (9 June 1792 – 22 May 1857) was a British Conservative politician, and barrister. Saunders Davies was the son of David Davies, a physician, who married Susanna, daughter and heiress of Erasmus Saunders of Pentre. He was educated at Harrow and Oxford. He married Elizabeth Maria, daughter of Colonel Owen Philipps, in 1829. He was admitted to Christ Church, Oxford in 1810, aged 18, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1814 and a Master of Arts in 1817, before being admitted into Lincoln's Inn in 1818. Davies was elected MP for Carmarthenshire at a by-election in 1842—caused by the death of John Jones of Ystrad—and held the seat until his death in 1857. David Pugh (British Politician)
David Pugh (1806 – 12 July 1890) was a Welsh landowner and Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1857 until 1868 and again from 1885 until his death in 1890. Early life and career Pugh was born at Green Hill, Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire (which was later renamed Manoravon), the eldest son of Colonel David Heron Pugh, who was High Sheriff of Carmarthenshire in 1819, and his wife Elizabeth Beynon, daughter of William Beynon of Trewern, Llanddewi Velfrey, Pembrokeshire. His brother, John William Pugh, was Vicar of Llandeilo for fifteen years. Pugh was educated at Rugby School and Balliol College, Oxford, graduating in 1828. In 1837 he was called to the Bar at Inner Temple and for some years he practiced on the Northern Circuit. John Lloyd Davies
John Lloyd Davies (1 November 1801 – 21 March 1860) was a Welsh lawyer and politician, originally from the Aberystwyth area, who represented Cardigan boroughs in Parliament between 1855 and 1857. He was born "in humble curcumstances", to which he alluded when seeking election as MP for Cardigan Boroughs in 1855. His parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Davies. He began his career as a solicitor, and is known by the age of 24 to have been working for a practice in Newcastle Emlyn. In 1825 he married Anne, a daughter of John Lloyd of Allt-yr-odyn, and thus inherited her family estate. One of Anne's ancestors had been a David Lloyd ("David ap Llewellin Lloid") who was MP for Cardiganshire in the sixteenth century. Edward Pryse
Colonel Edward Lewis Pryse (27 June 1817 – 29 May 1888) was a British Liberal politician. Pryse entered the military in 1836, before becoming captain of the Carabiniers (6th Dragoon Guards), and retiring in 1846. From 1857 to 1888, he was Lord Lieutenant of Cardiganshire, and from 27 May 1865 he was Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant of the county militia regiment, the Royal Cardigan Rifles. Howel Gwyn
Howel Gwyn (24 June 1806 – 25 January 1888) of Dyffryn, Neath, was a British Conservative politician, who represented Penryn and Falmouth (1847–57) and Brecon (1866–68). Early life Gwyn was the son of William Gwyn and Mary Anne Roberts. His mother was the daughter of John Roberts of Barnstaple, Devon. He was educated privately at Neath and at Swansea Grammar School. Public life Gwyn participated in the public life of several Welsh counties. He was High Sheriff of Glamorgan in 1837, of Carmarthenshire in 1838 and of Breconshire in 1844. Gwyn successfully contested Penryn and Falmouth at the 1847 General Election and continued to represent the borough until 1857. The Welshman (established in 1832) was a weekly 'radical' English language Welsh newspaper, reporting local and national news and information. It was published in Carmarthen and distributed in the Cardiganshire area and through much of South Wales. From 1840 to 1942 it was known as ''The Welshman and general advertiser for the Principality of Wales'', reverting to its original name in 1942. Llandeilo
Llandeilo () is a town and community in Carmarthenshire, Wales, situated at the crossing of the River Towy by the A483 on a 19th-century stone bridge. Its population was 1,795 at the 2011 Census. It is adjacent to the westernmost point of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The town is served by Llandeilo railway station on the Heart of Wales Line. In 2021, ''The Sunday Times'' called the town one of the top six places to live in Wales. The newspaper praised the town as a ‘sophisticated shopping destination and a great showcase for local arts and crafts’.
