1856 Fox Ministry
The Fox Ministry was the second responsible government to be formed in New Zealand. It formed in 1856, but lasted less than a month, from 20 May to 2 June 1856. From the outset, William Fox served as Prime Minister as well as Attorney-General. Background Fox was the leader of a 'Wellington Party' of provincial supporters in opposition to the government of Henry Sewell during the 1856 session of Parliament. He moved resolutions which led to the Sewell Ministry's demise. Fox subsequently formed a new ministry at the Governor's invitation. His provincial policies were seen as too extreme for many members, particularly from Auckland. Responsible government is a conception of a system of government that embodies the principle of parliamentary accountability, the foundation of the Westminster system of parliamentary democracy. Governments (the equivalent of the executive branch) in Westminster democracies are responsible to parliament rather than to the monarch, or, in a colonial context, to the imperial government, and in a republican context, to the president, either in full or in part. Colonial Secretary (New Zealand)
The colonial secretary of New Zealand was an office established in 1840 and abolished in 1907. The office was similar to Chief Secretary (British Empire), colonial secretaries found elsewhere in the British Empire. Along with the Chief Justice of New Zealand, chief justice, the office was one of the first four created by Governor-General of New Zealand, Governor William Hobson when he arrived in New Zealand in January 1840. The Colonial Secretary's Office handled the creation of New Zealand's public service, and became the modern Department of Internal Affairs (New Zealand), Department of Internal Affairs in 1907. Robert Wynyard
Robert Henry Wynyard (24 December 1802 – 6 January 1864) was a New Zealand colonial administrator, serving at various times as Lieutenant Governor of New Ulster Province, Administrator of the Government, and was the first Superintendent of Auckland Province. Early life He was born in Windsor Castle to William Wynyard, Colonel of the 5th Regiment of Foot and Equerry to King George III. Robert was educated in Dunmow, Essex and joined the British Army as an ensign in the 85th (Duke of York's Own Light Infantry) Regiment, transferring in 1826 to the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot. He served in Ireland from 1828 to 1841 on the staff of the adjutant general, and was promoted to major in 1841. Ralph Richardson (1812–1897/1898) was a Member of the New Zealand Legislative Council. He lived in New Zealand for less than a decade, and retired to Devon in England, and later to London. Biography Richardson was born in Capenhurst, Cheshire, England in 1812. He was educated at The King's School, Chester, Chester Grammar School, at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an Doctor of Medicine, MD, and Downing College, Cambridge (from where he graduated Master of Arts, MA and became a fellow); Richardson never practised as a doctor. Aged 28, he married Marie Louise Seymour, a daughter of George Turner Seymour of Wraxall, Somerset. William Daldy
William Crush Daldy (1816 – 5 October 1903) was a 19th-century captain and New Zealand politician. Biography Daldy was born on 20 April 1816 in Rainham, Essex, England. He started going to sea aged 16 on the ''Mayflower'', a ship belonging to his father Samuel Rootsey Daldy, an Ilford coal merchant. His seafaring first brought him to Auckland in July 1841. On 10 December 1840 he sailed from Liverpool in his schooner ''Shamrock'', arriving in Auckland in July 1841, but remained a seafarer. In 1847 he started timber milling near Auckland. From 1849 he was a partner in the shipping firm Combes and Daldy. He was a shareholder of Auckland Timber Co and his son, W C Daldy Jr., was its secretary. In April 1864 the Daldy family sailed to London and in 1865 he became the English agent for the Province. They returned on Combes and Daldy's ship, ''Queen of the North'', in 1866.
