In the 1853 Chicago mayoral election, Charles McNeill Gray defeated Josiah L. James in a landslide, winning by a 54-point margin. Incumbent mayor Walter S. Gurnee did not run for reelection. The election was held on March 14. Josiah L. James was a businessman in the lumber industry. 1852 Chicago Mayoral Election
In the 1852 Chicago mayoral election, incumbent Democrat Walter S. Gurnee defeated former mayor James Curtiss (running as an independent) as well as Temperance candidate Amos G. Throop and Mechanics candidate Peter Page by a ten-point margin. Campaign B.W. Raymond was the initial nominee of the Temperance (Prohibition) Party. However, for unspecified reasons, his candidacy was withdrawn in late February in favor of Throop. The election was an energetic one, particularly due to the debate over liquor. Other issues that were debated in the election were the reduction of taxes, avoiding an increase in city debt, preventing lawyers from obtaining gratuities, eliminating connection between the city government and private corporations, and suffrage. It was alleged during the campaign that a candidate in the previous election had spent $3,000 in buying voters liquor. In the 1854 Mayoral elections in Chicago, Chicago mayoral election, Democrat Isaac Lawrence Milliken defeated Temperance Party nominee Amos G. Throop by a Landslide victory, landslide 19.5% margin. Throop had run previously 1852 Chicago mayoral election, in 1852. Incumbent mayor Charles McNeill Gray did not run for reelection. The election was held on March 13. Campaigning Throop had the support of the city's temperance forces. Milliken supported giving Catholics a portion of the school fund and did not support temperance. Charles McNeill Gray
Charles McNeill Gray (June 13, 1807 – October 17, 1885) served as Mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1853–1854) for the Democratic Party. Biography Charles McNeill Gray was born in Sherburne, New York on June 13, 1807. He arrived in Chicago on July 17, 1834, and took a job as a clerk for Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard, later working for Peter Cohen, a retail merchant. By 1844 he was a candle maker with his own shop. He subsequently worked as a manufacturer, contractor and railroad man. He was elected mayor in 1853. A landslide victory is an election result in which the victorious candidate or party wins by an overwhelming margin. The term became popular in the 1800s to describe a victory in which the opposition is "buried", similar to the way in which a geological landslide buries whatever is in its path. What constitutes a landslide varies by the type of electoral system. Even within an electoral system, there is no consensus on what sized margin makes for a landslide.
