The Hub, Edinburgh
The Hub is a public arts and events building in the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. Located at the top of the Royal Mile, it is a prominent landmark as its tall gothic spire is the highest point in central Edinburgh, and towers over the surrounding buildings below Edinburgh Castle. The building is a notable example of Gothic Revival architecture and was designed by architects J Gillespie Graham and Augustus Pugin. Constructed between 1842 and 1845, it was originally designed as a meeting hall for the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. From 1929 the building was used as a church until the mid-1980s. Grand Prix De Rome
The Prix de Rome () or Grand Prix de Rome was a French scholarship for arts students, initially for painters and sculptors, that was established in 1663 during the reign of Louis XIV of France. Winners were awarded a bursary that allowed them to stay in Rome for three to five years at the expense of the state. The prize was extended to architecture in 1720, music in 1803 and engraving in 1804. The prestigious award was abolished in 1968 by André Malraux, then Minister of Culture, following the May 68 riots that called for cultural change. History The Prix de Rome was initially created for painters and sculptors in 1663 in France, during the reign of Louis XIV. It was an annual bursary for promising artists having proved their talents by completing a very difficult elimination contest. John William Livock
John William Livock (30 July 1814 - 15 March 1883) was an architect based in England, best known for his railway stations constructed for the London and North Western Railway. Family He was born on 30 July 1814 in Hampstead, the son of John Livock (1781-1840) a Coal Merchant, and Mary Millican (1792-1865). He was baptised on 25 September 1814 in St John's Church, Hampstead. He married Julia Barker (1823-1867) and they had two children *John Edward Livock (1848-1858) *Mary Livock (1850-1914) He died on 15 March 1883 in London. Career He constructed many of the stations on the Blisworth to Peterborough railway line which was built by the London and North Western Railway, and the Trent Valley Line and the southern part of the North Staffordshire Railway. Northampton And Peterborough Railway
The Northampton and Peterborough Railway was an early railway promoted by the London and Birmingham Railway (L&BR) to run from a junction at Blisworth on the L&BR main line to Northampton and Peterborough, in England. The construction of the line was authorised by Parliament in 1843 and the 47 mile line opened in 1845. The line largely followed the river Nene, and for economy of construction, it had many level crossings with intersecting roads, rather than bridges. In 1846 the L&BR joined with other companies, together forming the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). The line ran through largely agricultural terrain, and it never developed as much as later, neighbouring main line railways. It closed to ordinary passenger traffic in 1964, and closed completely in 1972. A part of it has since been reopened as the Nene Valley Railway heritage line. Wansford Railway Station
Wansford railway station is the headquarters of the Nene Valley Railway in Cambridgeshire, England. The station building was opened in 1995 and contains a ticket office, shop, cafe and toilets. The locomotive sheds are located at this station. Also at the station there is a picnic area and children's playground. The station was formerly the junction for a branch to Stamford, which separated to the north just east of the river bridge at Wansford. Wansford station and the line immediately either side of it, including the level crossing and the river bridge appeared several times in the James Bond film ''Octopussy''. Oundle Railway Station
Oundle railway station is a Grade II listed former railway station in Oundle, Northamptonshire on the former Northampton and Peterborough Railway line which connected Peterborough and Northampton. In 1846 the line, along with the London and Birmingham, became part of the London and North Western Railway. At grouping in 1923 it became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway. History The stations on this line were probably the most extravagant of any. They were designed by John William Livock and constructed in the Jacobean style from local stone. Praha Masarykovo nádraží (Prague Masaryk railway station) is a terminal railway station near Republic Square (náměstí Republiky) in the New Town area of Prague, Czech Republic. It was the first railway station in the city to serve steam trains, and the second oldest railway station in Prague (the first is Praha-Dejvice, formerly Bruska on the Lány Horse-drawn Railway). The station was designed by Antonín Jüngling and came into service in 1845. David Brandon (architect)
David Brandon (13 December 1813 – 10 January 1897) was a Scottish architect. In partnership with Thomas Wyatt, he worked mostly in the Gothic style. He was articled to George Smith from 1828 to 1833. Five years later he entered into partnership with Wyatt, a partnership that lasted thirteen years until dissolved in 1851. He subsequently worked alone but took Samuel Tucker as an apprentice 1867 until before 1871. As a fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects he is recorded as having proposed both John Macvicar Anderson and Henry Saxon Snell for Fellowship. Brandon worked at a number of English country houses and churches, these include: Badminton House, Basildon Park, Bayham Abbey, Hemsted House, Chilham Castle, Fonthill Abbey, Hensol Castle, Highnam Court, Hanley Castle and Williamstrip Park. Thomas Henry Wyatt
Thomas Henry Wyatt (9 May 1807 – 5 August 1880) was an Anglo-Irish architect. He had a prolific and distinguished career, being elected President of the Royal Institute of British Architects 1870–73 and being awarded its Royal Gold Medal for Architecture in 1873.
