Governors Of The Australian States
The governors of the Australian states are the representatives of Australia's monarch in each of Australia's six states. The governors are the nominal chief executives of the states, performing the same constitutional and ceremonial functions at the state level as does the Governor-General of Australia at the national or federal level. The state governors are not subject to the constitutional authority of the governor-general, but are directly responsible to the monarch. In practice, with notable exceptions the governors are generally required by convention to act on the advice of the state premiers or the other members of a state's cabinet. Origins The office of governor ("governor in chief" was an early title) is the oldest constitutional office in Australia. Joseph Vardon
Joseph Vardon (27 July 1843 – 20 July 1913) was an Australian politician. Born in Adelaide, he received a primary education before becoming a farm worker and apprentice printer, running his own printing business by 1871. He sat on Hindmarsh, Unley, and Adelaide City councils, and was President of the South Australian Liberal Union. He was elected to the Legislative Council of South Australia for the Central District in May 1900, serving until October 1906. Vardon resigned to contest the federal election in December 1906 as an Anti-Socialist candidate for the three South Australian seats in the Australian Senate. At the first count he was in fourth place, 16 votes behind Dugald Crosby. A second count however put Vardon into third, 34 votes ahead of Crosby. Nathaniel Dawes
Nathaniel Dawes (24 July 1843 – 12 September 1910) was an Anglican bishop in Australia. He was the first Bishop of Rockhampton in Queensland, from 1892 to 1909. He was the first bishop to be consecrated in Australia. Early life Dawes was born in Rye, Sussex, England, and educated at Montpelier College, Brighton, and St Alban Hall, Oxford. He was an engineer who was involved in the construction of Blackfriars Bridge. Ordained ministry Dawes was ordained a deacon in 1871 and priest in 1872. His first post was as a curate at St Peter's Church, Vauxhall, from 1871 to 1877 after which he was vicar of Charterhouse, Somerset, before emigrating to Australia to become the rector of St Andrew's South Brisbane. He was then appointed Archdeacon of Brisbane and later its first coadjutor bishop before translation to Rockhampton in 1892. John Downer
Sir John William Downer, KCMG, KC (6 July 1843 – 2 August 1915) was an Australian politician who served two terms as Premier of South Australia, from 1885 to 1887 and again from 1892 to 1893. He later entered federal politics and served as a Senator for South Australia from 1901 to 1903. He was the first of four Australian politicians from the Downer family dynasty. Early life Born in Adelaide, John Downer (the son of Henry Downer who came to South Australia in 1838 and Jane Downer ) was educated on a scholarship at St Peter's College, Adelaide,.
