1836 Project
Texas House Bill 2497, better known as the 1836 Project, was a bill created in June 2021 by the Texas House of Representatives and was signed into law by Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas. Development House Bill 2497 was passed in June 2021, receiving support from Republicans and Democrats, and was signed into law by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Republicans attached amendments to the bill requiring the project to also raise awareness of the state’s Christian heritage, its traditions of owning guns, and the Texas origins of the annual Juneteenth holiday. Democrats amended the bill and added requirements to include the contributions to the state by people of Hispanic ancestry. A requirement was also added by Democrats to include the historical roles that Texans have played in bolstering voting rights since the 1960s. Dan Goeb Patrick (born Dannie Scott Goeb; April 4, 1950) is an American radio talk show host, television broadcaster, and politician. He has been serving as the 42nd lieutenant governor of Texas since January 2015, under Greg Abbott. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Patrick began his career as a radio and television broadcaster. Critical race theory (CRT) is a cross-disciplinary examination, by social and civil-rights scholars and activists, of how laws, social and political movements, and media shape, and are shaped by, social conceptions of race and ethnicity. The 1619 Project
The 1619 Project is a long-form journalism endeavor developed by Nikole Hannah-Jones, writers from ''The New York Times'', and ''The New York Times Magazine'' which "aims to reframe the country's history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of the United States' national narrative." The first publication stemming from the project was in ''The New York Times Magazine'' of August 2019 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in the English colony of Virginia. These were also the first Africans in mainland British America, though Africans had been in other parts of North America since the 1500s. Nikole Sheri Hannah-Jones (born April 9, 1976) is an American investigative journalist, known for her coverage of civil rights in the United States. In April 2015, she became a staff writer for ''The New York Times.'' Tejanos (, ; singular: ''Tejano/a''; Spanish for "Texan", originally borrowed from the Caddo ''tayshas'') are the residents of the state of Texas who are culturally descended from the Mexican population of Tejas and Coahuila that lived in the region prior to it becoming what is now known as the state of Texas before it became a U.S. state in 1845.
